Volatility Stop with Vwap Strategy
Sep 23, 2022

The Volatility Stop with Vwap Strategy indicator is a trend-following tool designed to identify market direction and execute trades by combining volatility-based trailing stops with weekly Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) filtering.
Usage
The tool is primarily used to identify entries in the direction of the macro trend while using volatility as a dynamic trigger. It utilizes two main layers of confirmation:
- Long Entries: Triggered when the price closes above the Volatility Stop line and remains above the Weekly VWAP.
- Short Entries: Triggered when the price closes below the Volatility Stop line and remains below the Weekly VWAP.
- Exits: The strategy automatically calculates Take Profit (TP) and Stop Loss (SL) levels based on the distance between the close price and the Volatility Stop. It also exits positions if a reversal signal occurs (e.g., a long position is closed if a short signal is generated).
Details
The strategy is built upon the classic Volatility Stop (MTF) concept, which uses the Average True Range (ATR) to create a trailing boundary around price action. By integrating a Weekly VWAP, the script ensures that trades are only taken when price momentum aligns with the weekly volume profile, reducing the likelihood of being caught in "whipsaw" movements during low-volatility periods. The risk management is dynamic, adjusting the projected TP and SL targets based on current market volatility at the time of entry.
Settings
- Source: Determines the price input used for the volatility stop calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
- Length: Sets the lookback period for the ATR calculation used to determine the stop distance.
- ATR Factor: A multiplier applied to the ATR value to widen or tighten the volatility stop boundary.
FAQ
How do I interpret the colors on the chart?
The Volatility Stop line changes color based on the detected trend: green typically indicates a bullish trend where the stop is below the price, and red indicates a bearish trend where the stop is above the price.
Can I use this on any timeframe?
While the Volatility Stop adapts to your chart timeframe, the VWAP is fixed to a weekly interval to provide a stable macro trend filter regardless of whether you are viewing a 5-minute or 1-hour chart.
