The Volume Weighted Momentum indicator is a technical analysis tool designed to identify trend momentum shifts and potential market breakouts by integrating Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) into a momentum-based oscillator framework.

Usage

The Volume Weighted Momentum indicator can be used to gauge the strength and direction of a trend. Traders typically look for the following signals:

  • Trend Direction: The color-coded oscillator background indicates the broader trend based on VWAP-derived moving averages. Green shades suggest bullish momentum, while red shades suggest bearish momentum.
  • Momentum Crossovers: The tool includes a MACD-style component. When the MACD line (colored based on its position relative to the signal line) crosses above the signal line, a bullish triangle appears at the top of the pane. Conversely, a bearish triangle appears when it crosses below.
  • Momentum Squeezes: By observing the Bollinger Bands applied to the MACD line, users can identify periods of low volatility ("squeezes"). A tightening of these bands often precedes a significant expansion in momentum and a larger price move.

Details

The indicator primarily utilizes the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) as its source data rather than standard closing prices. This ensures that the momentum calculations account for the volume at which price levels were traded, providing a more comprehensive view of market conviction.

The script calculates two primary components:

  1. VWAP Differential (S2): A background fill based on the difference between a 20-period and 50-period EMA of the VWAP, highlighting mid-term trend strength.
  2. VWAP MACD: A traditional MACD calculation applied to the VWAP, which is then bounded by Bollinger Bands to visualize momentum volatility and standard deviations.

Settings

  • Fast Length: Sets the period for the faster Exponential Moving Average used in the MACD calculation.
  • Slow Length: Sets the period for the slower Exponential Moving Average used in the MACD calculation.
  • Signal Length: Sets the smoothing period for the MACD signal line.

FAQ

How do I interpret the background colors?

The background colors represent the relationship between short-term and long-term VWAP averages. Brighter colors indicate accelerating momentum in the direction of the trend, while faded colors suggest decelerating momentum or a potential "squeeze" before a reversal.

What do the triangles at the top mean?

The triangles represent crossovers between the MACD line and the Signal line. A green triangle indicates a bullish crossover, while a red triangle indicates a bearish crossover.
