Volumetric Trend Structure
Apr 28, 2026

The Volumetric Trend Structure indicator provides a pivot-anchored trend identification system that constructs dynamic drift lines from the rolling average of confirmed swing highs and lows to define structural market boundaries. It utilizes statistically normalized volume measurements and pivot-based market geometry to establish trend direction and support/resistance levels rather than relying on traditional lagging price derivatives.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to navigate market structure and identify participation intensity.
- Trend Identification: A bullish trend is established when price closes above the upper drift line, while a bearish trend is confirmed when price closes below the lower drift line.
- Structural Support/Resistance: In a bullish state, the lower drift line acts as the active support band. In a bearish state, the upper drift line acts as the active resistance band.
- Volume Intensity: The volume histogram anchored to the active drift band displays normalized volume. Upward-projecting bars indicate participation in a bullish structure, while downward-projecting bars indicate participation in a bearish structure.
- Visual Cues: Green (Bullish) and Red (Bearish) triangle labels mark structural trend transitions. Diamond markers indicate volume "spikes" that exceed four standard deviations of the 200-bar rolling average.
- Candle Coloring: Users can enable volume-intensity candle coloring, which graduates from muted to saturated based on participation strength. Original chart candles should be disabled for optimal visibility.
Details
The script operates through several interconnected technical systems:
- Pivot Averaging: The tool identifies swing highs and lows using a configurable left-right bar requirement. These pivots are stored in rolling arrays, and their averages form the "Drift Lines." This ensures the trend boundaries only shift when actual market structure changes.
- Volume Normalization: Raw volume is divided by its 200-bar rolling standard deviation. This creates a dimensionless score capped at four standard deviations, allowing the indicator to rank volume significance objectively across any timeframe or asset.
- Histogram Scaling: To ensure the volume histogram remains proportional to the price action, the indicator uses a range-derived step size based on the 200-bar average bar range.
- Active Band Logic: The "Active Band" is the specific drift line currently serving as the trend's primary structural reference. The volume histogram is always anchored to this level to connect participation data directly to the trend's defining boundary.
Settings
Pivot Settings
- Pivot Length: The number of bars required to the left and right to confirm a structural swing high or low.
- Pivots to Average: The number of recent confirmed pivots used to calculate the drift line position.
Volume
- Volume Size: Scales the visual height of the volume histogram bars relative to the price range.
- Volume Histogram: Toggles the visibility of the band-anchored volume bars.
- Volume Color Mode:
- Delta: Colors bars by buy/sell pressure gradient based on price close relative to bar range.
- Trend: Colors bars uniformly based on the current structural trend.
- Trend + Spikes: Uses trend coloring but highlights statistical volume outliers in a unique color.
Display
- Color Candles: Toggles volume-intensity candle coloring on the price action.
- Trend Fill: Toggles the gradient fill between the active structural band and the price.
- Bullish/Bearish/Spike Colors: Customizes the color palette for different trend states and volume events.
FAQ
How do I adjust the sensitivity of the trend signals? You can increase the "Pivot Length" to require more significant price swings for confirmation, which reduces noise, or decrease the "Pivots to Average" to make the drift lines more responsive to recent structural changes.
Why are the candles not changing color even though the setting is on? For the trend-colored candles to display correctly, you must disable the default price candles in your charting platform's settings (usually found under Chart Settings > Symbol > Candles).
