The VWAP BANDS indicator is a technical analysis tool that estimates support and resistance levels by calculating volume-weighted average prices based on decomposed buying and selling volume. By separating volume into directional components, the script provides a more nuanced view of price levels where specific market participants may reject or support price action.

Usage

The VWAP BANDS tool can be used to identify potential market reversals or trend continuations on various timeframes.

  • Scalping: For short-term trading, users often apply the indicator to lower timeframes (such as 5m or 15m) while potentially setting the indicator calculation timeframe to 1m for more granular data. Traders look for price rejection or support at the outer bands in confluence with other price action methods.
  • Swing Trading: For long-term positions, the indicator is effective on higher timeframes like the 1H, 4H, or Daily charts. Using the "Chart" setting for the indicator timeframe ensures the bands align with the broader market trend.
  • Asset Selection: This tool is particularly useful on perpetual contracts and high-liquidity instruments where volume data is more consistent, leading to more accurate band placement.

Details

Unlike standard VWAP calculations that use total volume, this script estimates individual buying and selling volume based on the price's position within the candle's range. It then calculates two distinct VWAPs:

  1. Buy-Side VWAP: Derived from estimated buying volume.
  2. Sell-Side VWAP: Derived from estimated selling volume.

Standard deviation bands are then projected from these values. The upper bands are anchored to the buy-side VWAP, while the lower bands are anchored to the sell-side VWAP. This creates dynamic zones that reflect the volatility and volume distribution of both market sides independently.

Settings

VWAP Settings

  • Source: Determines the price source used for the VWAP calculations (default is HLC3).
  • Length: The lookback period used to calculate the sum of volume and price-volume products.
  • SD Multiplier 1: The multiplier for the first set of standard deviation bands.
  • SD Multiplier 2: The multiplier for the second (outer) set of standard deviation bands.
  • Show double bands: Toggles the visibility of the second standard deviation band for a wider volatility range.

Styling

  • Line Color: Customizes the color of the band outlines.
  • Background Color: Customizes the fill color between the bands.

FAQ

How do I interpret the buy and sell bands?

The upper bands represent areas where buying volume has historically pushed price, often acting as resistance or exhaustion points. The lower bands represent areas where selling volume is concentrated, acting as potential support zones.

What is the advantage of using decomposed volume?

Standard VWAP treats all volume equally. By decomposing volume into buy and sell components, the indicator identifies specific price levels where one side of the market is more dominant, providing a clearer picture of supply and demand.
