The Bollinger Bands Wide & Narrow indicator provides a visual representation of volatility changes by comparing the Bollinger Bands Width to its moving average. This tool allows traders to quickly identify periods of expanding or contracting volatility, helping to distinguish between trending environments and consolidation phases.

Usage

The Bollinger Bands Wide & Narrow tool is used primarily to gauge the state of market volatility. The indicator plots a gradient area between the Bollinger Bands Width (BBW) and its Simple Moving Average (SMA).

  • Bands Widening (Green Shade): When the BBW is above its SMA, the indicator displays a green gradient. This suggests that the bands are expanding, indicating increasing volatility and potentially the start of a strong trend.
  • Bands Narrowing (Red Shade): When the BBW is below its SMA, the indicator displays a red gradient. This suggests that the bands are contracting, indicating decreasing volatility and a likely period of consolidation or "squeeze."

Traders can use these signals to prepare for potential breakouts (during red phases) or to stay with a trend (during green phases).

Details

The indicator calculates the standard Bollinger Bands Width by subtracting the lower band from the upper band and dividing by the basis (middle band). To determine the trend of this width, a Simple Moving Average (SMA) is applied to the BBW using the same length as the main bands.

The visual output uses a gradient fill system. It calculates 10 distinct levels between the BBW line and the SMA line to create a smooth color transition, making it easier to see the intensity of the widening or narrowing movement.

Settings

Bollinger Bands

  • Length: The lookback period used for both the Bollinger Bands calculation and the SMA of the width.
  • Source: The price data point used for calculations (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
  • StdDev: The multiplier for the standard deviation, which determines the distance of the bands from the basis.

FAQ

How do I use the green and red shades in my trading?

The green shade indicates increasing volatility, which often accompanies a trending market. The red shade indicates decreasing volatility, suggesting the market is entering a range or preparing for a future breakout.

Can I change the sensitivity of the volatility detection?

Yes, by adjusting the Length setting, you can make the indicator more or less responsive to short-term price fluctuations. A shorter length will detect volatility changes faster, while a longer length will provide a smoother, more macro view.
