RSI + Support/Resistance Zones + EMA
Jun 24, 2021

The RSI + Support/Resistance Zones + EMA indicator combines a standard Relative Strength Index with dynamic support and resistance ranges and an exponential moving average to provide a comprehensive view of momentum and market regime.
Usage
The indicator is designed to help traders identify potential reversal and trend continuation points based on historical RSI behavior in different market environments.
- Bull Market SR-Zones: In bullish regimes, price momentum often finds resistance between the 80 and 90 RSI levels, while finding support between the 40 and 50 levels.
- Bear Market SR-Zones: In bearish regimes, resistance typically shifts lower to the 55-65 range, with support found between the 20 and 30 RSI levels.
- RSI-EMA Crossovers: The included EMA acts as a dynamic signal line. A common strategy involves waiting for a correction where the RSI stays below the EMA, then entering a long position when the RSI crosses back above the EMA, suggesting a resumption of the primary trend.
Details
This tool implements concepts popularized by Constance Brown in "Technical Analysis for the Trading Professional." Unlike traditional RSI interpretations that rely on fixed 70/30 overbought and oversold levels, this approach recognizes that RSI ranges shift depending on whether the market is in a bull or bear cycle. By plotting these specific zones, traders can better contextualize RSI readings relative to the prevailing trend.
Settings
- RSI Period: Sets the lookback period for the Relative Strength Index calculation (default is 14).
- EMA Period: Sets the lookback period for the Exponential Moving Average applied to the RSI (default is 10).
FAQ
How do I use the support and resistance zones?
The zones act as areas where momentum is likely to stall or reverse. In a strong uptrend, look for the RSI to bounce off the 40-50 "Bull Support" zone. In a downtrend, look for the RSI to fail at the 55-65 "Bear Resistance" zone.
What do the EMA crossovers signify?
The EMA serves as a trend-following filter for the RSI. When the RSI is above its EMA, momentum is generally increasing; when below, momentum is decreasing. Crossovers can be used as entry or exit triggers.
