The WaveTrend Oscillator is a port of a classic technical analysis tool designed to improve upon traditional oscillators like the RSI or Stochastic. It calculates the relationship between price (HLC3) and its Exponential Moving Average (EMA) to create a "Channel Index."

  1. Price Basis: It uses the typical price (HLC3), which is the average of the High, Low, and Close.
  2. Smoothing: The script applies an EMA to the typical price to establish a baseline (ESA), then calculates the mean absolute deviation to normalize the oscillator values.
  3. Signal Generation: The main oscillator (WT1) is a smoothed version of this normalized value, while the signal line (WT2) is a simple moving average of WT1. This creates a lag-sensitive crossover system that filters out minor price noise while capturing cyclical swings.

Settings

  • Channel Length: Determines the period used for the initial EMA and deviation calculations. Smaller values make the indicator more sensitive to price changes.
  • Average Length: Sets the smoothing period for the TCI calculation. Higher values result in a smoother, slower-moving oscillator.
  • Over Bought Level 1: Defines the primary upper boundary for overbought conditions (default is 60).
  • Over Bought Level 2: Defines a secondary, less extreme upper boundary for overbought conditions (default is 53).
  • Over Sold Level 1: Defines the primary lower boundary for oversold conditions (default is -60).
  • Over Sold Level 2: Defines a secondary, less extreme lower boundary for oversold conditions (default is -53).
