The BBImpulse Indicator tool measures the periodic change in the Bollinger Bands %b value to identify momentum shifts and trend acceleration points. It provides a visual representation of impulse changes relative to predefined alert and impulse levels, helping traders detect potential trend continuations or exhaustion signals.

Usage

The BBImpulse Indicator is used to identify the strength and direction of price momentum. The market generally moves in the direction of the latest alerts or impulses, except during the late stages of a trend where high readings may indicate exhaustion.

  • Bullish Momentum: When the histogram is green and above the Alert Level (0.24) or Impulse Level (0.40), it indicates strengthening upward momentum.
  • Bearish Momentum: When the histogram is red and below the negative Alert Level (-0.24) or negative Impulse Level (-0.40), it indicates strengthening downward momentum.
  • Neutral State: Values between the positive and negative alert levels suggest a lack of significant momentum.
  • Range Interpretation: If the "Show Range" option is enabled, users can monitor the expansion or contraction of the %b range. A narrowing range may signify topping or falling prices, while an expanding range may signify a potential bottom or rising prices.

Details

BBImpulse is derived from %b, which represents the current price position relative to the Bollinger Bands. The calculation for BBImpulse is the current period's %b minus the previous period's %b. For example, if %b was 0.45 this period and 0.20 last period, the BBImpulse value is 0.25.

The indicator incorporates specific thresholds popularized by Ian Woodward for "Kahuna" signals, typically utilizing levels of 0.24 for alerts and 0.40 for impulses. This version also includes visual highlighting for these triggers and an optional area plot to visualize the raw %b range.

Settings

  • Length: Sets the lookback period for the underlying Bollinger Bands calculation.
  • Mult Factor: Determines the number of standard deviations for the Bollinger Bands width.
  • Alert Level: Defines the threshold for initial momentum alerts (default is 0.24).
  • Impulse Level: Defines the threshold for strong momentum impulses (default is 0.40).
  • Show Range: Toggles the visibility of the %b range area plots on the oscillator.

FAQ

How do I interpret the colors of the histogram?

Green bars indicate positive impulse values above the alert levels, while red bars indicate negative impulse values below the alert levels. Blue bars indicate the impulse is within the neutral zone between the alert levels.

What is the difference between an Alert and an Impulse?

An Alert level (0.24) suggests that momentum is starting to pick up, while an Impulse level (0.40) suggests a stronger, more established shift in price velocity.
