HL BREAKOUT
Feb 11, 2016

The HL BREAKOUT indicator identifies potential trend continuations and reversals by detecting breakouts of historical high and low price levels with a user-defined volatility filter. This tool provides visual markers on the chart when the price closes beyond these established levels by a specific margin, helping traders filter out noise and confirm significant price movements.
Usage
The HL BREAKOUT tool can be used to identify entry points following price breakouts. The script plots historical high and low levels as steps on the chart. A buy signal is generated when the price closes above the historical high level by at least the specified "Breakout PIPs" amount. Conversely, a sell signal occurs when the price closes below the historical low level by at least the specified amount.
For optimal performance, users should adjust the sensitivity based on their timeframe:
- Lower Timeframes (1m to 15m): A lower breakout PIP value (e.g., 0.0003) is often preferred to capture smaller movements.
- Higher Timeframes (>15m): A higher breakout PIP value (e.g., 0.0005 or greater) is recommended to prevent false signals caused by minor price fluctuations.
- Asset Specifics: For standard Forex pairs (4-5 decimals), use small decimal values like 0.0003. For JPY pairs or assets with 2 decimal places, adjust the PIP value accordingly (e.g., 0.03).
Details
The indicator calculates the highest high and lowest low over a lookback period defined by the user. It uses the ta.highest and ta.lowest functions to determine these levels. The core logic requires not just a breach of the level, but a candle close that exceeds the level plus/minus a threshold. This threshold acts as a confirmation filter, ensuring that only "strong" breakouts are flagged. The indicator also monitors changes in the pivot levels to ensure signals are synchronized with shifting market structures.
Settings
- High Length: The number of bars used to calculate the historical highest high level.
- Low Length: The number of bars used to calculate the historical lowest low level.
- Breakout PIPs: The minimum distance (in price units) required beyond the high or low level for a breakout to be validated.
FAQ
How do I access HL BREAKOUT?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
Why are there no signals on my chart?
This may be due to the "Breakout PIPs" setting being too high for the current asset's volatility. Try lowering the PIP threshold to see more frequent signals or ensure the High/Low lengths are appropriate for the chart's data.
Can I use this for stocks or crypto?
Yes, however, the "Breakout PIPs" setting must be adjusted to match the price scale of the asset. For example, a setting of 0.0003 is appropriate for EURUSD but would be too small for Bitcoin or a high-priced stock.
