The ADX Volatility Waves indicator provides a regime-aware volatility framework that maps price extremes using adaptive wave structures driven by trend strength. By combining directional movement with statistical dispersion, it helps traders visualize volatility cycles and identify potential exhaustion or expansion points in real time.

Usage

The ADX Volatility Waves tool is used to contextualize price movement within trend-weighted volatility zones. Traders can use the gradient bands to identify overextension:

  • Upper Volatility Waves (Red Gradient): These represent upside expansion. When price penetrates deep into these layers, it indicates an overextended bullish state relative to current trend strength.
  • Lower Volatility Waves (Green Gradient): These represent downside expansion. Presence in these zones signals bearish pressure, while an exit toward the center suggests wave completion.
  • Equilibrium Zone: The neutral area between the waves. Re-entering this zone after an expansion phase often marks the completion of a volatility cycle.
  • Squeeze Detection: The indicator identifies volatility compression (squeezes), signaling periods where a new volatility wave is likely to emerge.

Details

The indicator fuses Bollinger-derived dispersion with ADX normalization. Unlike standard volatility bands, the width and depth of these waves are directly influenced by the Average Directional Index (ADX). As trend intensity increases, the volatility waves expand; as the trend weakens, the waves compress. This prevents premature reversal signals during strong trending phases.

The system uses a state-based transition logic. Signals (BUY/SELL labels) are generated when price first enters a wave zone. To ensure clarity and reduce noise, the indicator includes a cooldown mechanism and smoothing processes that stabilize the wave geometry.

Settings

Bollinger Bands

  • BB Length: The period used to calculate the moving average and standard deviation.
  • BB StdDev: The multiplier for the standard deviation, determining the base width of the bands.

ADX

  • ADX Length: The lookback period for the Average Directional Index calculation.
  • ADX Smoothing: The smoothing period applied to the ADX.
  • Strong/Weak Trend Thresholds: Levels used to define the intensity of the trend regime.
  • ADX Band Multiplier: Controls the degree to which ADX affects the expansion of the volatility waves.

Zones

  • Zone Offset from Price: The distance between the core Bollinger Bands and the start of the wave zones.
  • Zone Width: The vertical thickness of the colored wave zones.
  • Zone Smoothing Length: The period used to smooth the boundary lines to prevent jagged visual output.

Display & Signals

  • Show Entry Signals: Toggles the visibility of BUY and SELL labels.
  • Signal Cooldown (bars): The minimum number of bars required between consecutive signals.
  • Min Bars in Neutral Zone: Required duration in the equilibrium area before a new cycle can be validated.

FAQ

How do I interpret the BUY and SELL labels?

The labels appear when price first enters a volatility wave zone after a cooldown period. A BUY label indicates entry into the lower (oversold) wave, while a SELL label indicates entry into the upper (overbought) wave.

How does ADX change the bands?

When ADX is high (strong trend), the waves widen to account for increased directional volatility. When ADX is low (choppy or range market), the waves compress, making them more sensitive to mean-reversion movements.
