MACD Multi-MA Strategy
Dec 2, 2019

The MACD Multi-MA Strategy indicator provides a comprehensive trend-following approach by aggregating the directional signals of five major moving average types to identify market momentum and potential reversals.
Usage
The MACD Multi-MA Strategy can be used to identify high-probability trend entries by requiring "confluence" across different calculation methods.
- Long Entry: Occurs when all five moving averages (SMA, EMA, WMA, VWMA, and RMA) are simultaneously sloping upwards compared to their previous values.
- Short Entry: Occurs when all five moving averages are simultaneously sloping downwards compared to their previous values.
- Trend Strength: Because different moving averages react at different speeds, the visual spread between the plotted lines can help traders visualize volatility and trend maturity.
Details
This tool applies a unified lookback period to five distinct moving average types:
- Simple Moving Average (SMA): Provides a baseline average of price over the period.
- Exponential Moving Average (EMA): Places more weight on recent price data.
- Weighted Moving Average (WMA): Uses a linear weighting scheme for price data.
- Volume Weighted Moving Average (VWMA): Incorporates volume data to weight the average price.
- Running Moving Average (RMA): A specific type of exponential average often used in the calculation of the RSI.
By requiring all five indicators to agree on direction, the script filters out market noise and "whipsaws" that might occur when using only a single moving average type.
Settings
- LOOKBACK: Determines the window of bars used to calculate all five moving averages. A higher value will result in a smoother, slower-reacting trend signal, while a lower value will be more sensitive to short-term price fluctuations.
FAQ
How do I use the signals from this script?
Signals are generated when there is total agreement between the five included moving averages. You can look for the visual alignment of the plots on your chart or use the built-in strategy execution labels.
Can I change the length for individual moving averages?
Currently, the script uses a single "Lookback" setting for all five averages to ensure the directional agreement is based on the same timeframe context.
