The MACD Zero lag impulse system indicator is a technical analysis tool designed to identify high-probability momentum entries by combining trend inertia and oscillator momentum using zero-lag calculations. By utilizing Double Exponential Moving Averages (DEMA) instead of standard EMAs, the script provides a more responsive view of market direction, filtering out noise and highlighting periods where trend and momentum align.

Usage

The indicator is primarily used to identify market "impulses" where both price inertia and momentum are in agreement. This is visualized through a color-coded histogram and bar colors:

  • Bullish Impulse (Green): Occurs when the fast DEMA is rising and the MACD Histogram is increasing. This suggests that bulls are in control and the uptrend is accelerating.
  • Bearish Impulse (Red): Occurs when the fast DEMA is falling and the MACD Histogram is decreasing. This suggests that bears are in control and the downtrend is accelerating.
  • Neutral (Blue): Occurs when the moving average and the histogram are pointing in opposite directions, suggesting a lack of clear momentum or a potential trend transition.

Traders often use the green bars as signals to look for long entries and red bars for short entries, while avoiding new positions during neutral periods.

Details

The Impulse System logic is based on the synergy between trend-following and momentum. Typically, trend-following indicators like moving averages are lagging, while oscillators like MACD can be lead indicators but prone to false signals. This script addresses these issues by:

  1. Reducing Lag: Implementing Double Exponential Moving Averages (DEMA) for the fast, slow, and signal lines. The formula (2 * EMA) - EMA of EMA effectively reduces the delay found in standard moving averages.
  2. Inertia vs. Momentum: The fast DEMA represents the market inertia (the path of least resistance), while the MACD Histogram represents the power or momentum of the current move.

Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for calculations (default is Close).
  • Fast Length: The lookback period for the fast DEMA line (default is 12).
  • Slow Length: The lookback period for the slow DEMA line (default is 26).
  • Signal Length: The smoothing period for the MACD Signal line (default is 9).

FAQ
