The RSI - Dynamic Overbought/Oversold Range indicator provides an adaptive approach to identifying overbought and oversold conditions by calculating fluid threshold levels based on historical RSI volatility.

Usage

This tool is used to identify potential reversal points or trend exhaustion in markets where standard fixed levels (like 70 and 30) may be ineffective. For example, in a strong uptrend, the RSI might never reach 30; this script adjusts the oversold level higher to reflect the actual trading range of the oscillator.

Users can monitor crossovers of the RSI line and the dynamic bands:

  • Overbought Crossover: When the RSI crosses above the dynamic high band, it suggests the instrument is reaching a localized peak relative to recent volatility.
  • Oversold Crossunder: When the RSI crosses below the dynamic low band, it suggests the instrument is hitting a localized trough.

The "Sticky Range" feature allows the levels to remain constant until a new crossover occurs, providing a cleaner visual representation of the active trading range.

Details

Traditional RSI levels are static, which often leads to missed signals in trending markets. This script derives dynamic ranges by looking at the highest and lowest values of the RSI over a user-defined "Range Length."

If the "highlow" detection method is selected, the script refines the bands by looking for the lowest value of the recent highs (for the overbought line) and the highest value of the recent lows (for the oversold line). Alternatively, users can choose various moving average types (SMA, EMA, HMA, etc.) to smooth the dynamic ranges, offering a more lagged but stable threshold.

Settings

RSI

  • Resolution: Sets the timeframe for the RSI calculation (allows for Multi-Timeframe analysis).
  • Source: The price data used for the RSI (e.g., Close, Open, HL2).
  • Length: The lookback period for the standard RSI calculation.
  • Repaint: Determines whether the MTF data should be calculated in a way that avoids repainting.
  • Sticky Range: When enabled, the dynamic levels only update their position when a price crossover occurs.

Overbought/Oversold Range

  • Detection Method: Choose between "highlow" or various moving averages (SMA, EMA, RMA, HMA, WMA, VWMA, SWMA) to calculate the dynamic bands.
  • Length: The lookback period used specifically for detecting the highest/lowest oscillator ranges.

FAQ

How do I use the RSI - Dynamic Overbought/Oversold Range?

You can use it to identify exhaustion points in trending markets where standard RSI levels are rarely touched. When the RSI crosses these dynamic bands, it signals a potential extreme relative to recent price action.

What is the "highlow" detection method?

The "highlow" method looks for local extremes within the specified range length to create a tighter, more reactive boundary compared to the moving average options.
