The MACD Histogram/Area indicator isolates the histogram component of the Moving Average Convergence Divergence to provide a streamlined visual environment specifically designed for identifying trend momentum and price divergences.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on identifying shifts in momentum and potential trend reversals without the visual clutter of standard MACD and signal lines. By removing these lines, the histogram/area scales more effectively within the pane, making subtle movements more apparent.

  • Divergence Trading: This tool is primarily used to spot discrepancies between price action and momentum. A bullish divergence occurs when the price records a lower low while the indicator records a higher low. Conversely, a bearish divergence occurs when the price records a higher high while the indicator records a lower high.
  • Momentum Strength: The color-coded area plot indicates the strength of the current trend. Darker colors represent increasing momentum (the histogram is moving further from zero), while lighter colors represent waning momentum (the histogram is retreating toward zero).
  • Zero-Line Crossovers: Traders can monitor the transition of the area plot above or below the zero line to identify potential shifts in the medium-term trend bias.

Details

The indicator is constructed using the standard MACD calculation but focuses exclusively on the difference between the MACD line and the Signal line.

  1. MACD Line: Calculated as the difference between a Fast Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and a Slow EMA.
  2. Signal Line: An EMA of the MACD Line.
  3. Histogram/Area: The final output is the result of subtracting the Signal Line from the MACD Line.

The implementation uses an area style by default to provide a solid visual representation of momentum "waves." The color logic is four-fold: it distinguishes whether the value is above or below zero, and whether the current value is higher or lower than the previous bar's value, providing an immediate visual cue for momentum acceleration or deceleration.

Settings

  • Fast Length: The period used to calculate the faster Exponential Moving Average. Default is 12.
  • Slow Length: The period used to calculate the slower Exponential Moving Average. Default is 26.
  • Signal Length: The smoothing period applied to the MACD line to create the signal line, which determines the sensitivity of the histogram. Default is 9.

FAQ

How does this differ from the standard MACD indicator? This version removes the MACD and Signal lines to focus entirely on the histogram. This prevents the lines from overdrawing the data and allows the histogram to scale larger on the Y-axis for better visibility of divergences.

What do the different color shades signify? The shades represent momentum direction. For example, a bright green area indicates the histogram is above zero and rising, while a duller green indicates it is above zero but falling. The same logic applies to the red sections below zero.
