The Volume MACD indicator applies the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) logic to trading volume data, helping traders identify momentum shifts and trends within volume activity.

Usage

The Volume MACD is used to analyze the underlying momentum of trading volume rather than price. By applying exponential moving averages to volume, it highlights when buying or selling pressure is accelerating or decelerating.

  • MACD & Signal Crosses: A crossover of the Volume MACD line above the Signal line indicates an increase in volume momentum, while a crossunder suggests a decrease.
  • Histogram Analysis: The histogram represents the distance between the MACD and Signal lines. Rising green bars indicate expanding positive volume momentum, while falling red bars indicate expanding negative volume momentum.

Details

This script adapts the classic MACD formula by substituting price with the volume variable. It calculates the difference between two Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs) of volume (the short and long lengths) to create the MACD line. A third EMA, the Signal line, is then calculated from the MACD line itself. This approach allows traders to see volume trends that may not be immediately obvious on a standard volume sub-pane, providing a unique perspective on market participation.

Settings

  • Short EMA Length: Sets the lookback period for the fast exponential moving average of volume.
  • Long EMA Length: Sets the lookback period for the slow exponential moving average of volume.
  • Signal Length: Sets the smoothing period for the Signal line, which is an EMA of the MACD line.

FAQ

What does a crossover in Volume MACD signify?

A crossover signifies a shift in volume momentum. When the MACD line crosses above the Signal line, it indicates that recent volume activity is strengthening relative to its longer-term average.

Can this indicator be used on any timeframe?

Yes, the Volume MACD can be applied to any timeframe where volume data is available. It is particularly useful on intraday charts to identify bursts of activity.
