Impulse MACD
Jul 23, 2023

The Impulse MACD indicator is a momentum-based technical analysis tool designed to identify trend reversals and market strength by combining Zero-Lag Moving Averages with traditional MACD logic.
Usage
The Impulse MACD can be used to identify trend direction and momentum shifts through several visual components. Traders primarily look for crossovers between the MACD and Signal lines, which are highlighted by upward or downward arrows on the oscillator pane.
The indicator also features a specialized "Impulse Histo" and "Impulse MACD CD Signal" histogram. These histograms measure the distance between the price and a moving average filter, helping to categorize the market into three distinct states:
- Uptrend: Indicated by green background shading when momentum is positive.
- Downtrend: Indicated by red background shading when momentum is negative.
- Neutral: Indicated by blue background shading when the price remains within the Moving Average range.
Traders can also enable the "Enable bar colors" setting to color the price bars based on the impulse momentum, allowing for trend visualization directly on the main chart.
Details
The Impulse MACD utilizes a Zero-Lag Exponential Moving Average (ZLEMA) as its core calculation for the impulse component. By calculating the difference between two EMAs to reduce lag, the script creates a more responsive filter.
The "Impulse Histo" (md) represents the distance between the ZLEMA and a price range defined by the Simple Moving Averages (SMA) of the highs and lows. If the ZLEMA is above the high SMA, the impulse is positive; if below the low SMA, it is negative. The signal line for this impulse (sb) is an SMA of the impulse values themselves. This dual-layered approach filters out minor price fluctuations, focusing on sustained momentum.
Settings
- MA Length: Sets the lookback period for the primary Simple Moving Averages (High/Low) and the ZLEMA calculation.
- Signal Length: Determines the smoothing period for the Impulse signal line histogram.
- Enable bar colors: When toggled on, this changes the color of the chart bars to reflect the current impulse trend (Green for bullish, Red for bearish).
FAQ
How do I use the Buy and Sell arrows?
The arrows appear when the standard MACD line crosses the Signal line. An upward arrow suggests bullish momentum, while a downward arrow suggests bearish momentum.
What do the background colors represent?
The background boxes provide a quick visual of the trend state. Green indicates the impulse is above the upper range, Red indicates it is below the lower range, and Blue indicates a neutral or ranging market.
