The T3 Volatility Quality Index (VQI) w/ DSL & Pips Filtering indicator provides a sophisticated method for distinguishing between high-quality market volatility and noise to identify high-probability trend opportunities. By combining T3 smoothing, Discontinued Signal Lines (DSL), and a minimum pip movement filter, it aims to reduce false signals and provide clearer breakout or breakdown confirmations.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on interpreting the VQI line and its interaction with the Discontinued Signal Lines.

  • Trend Identification: A green VQI line signifies an uptrend, while a red line signifies a downtrend. Gray sections indicate a lack of momentum or a neutral state where price has not crossed the relevant signal levels.
  • DSL Signals: The Discontinued Signal Lines (DSL) act as dynamic support and resistance levels for the indicator itself. A bullish breakout occurs when the VQI line crosses above the upper DSL, while a bearish breakdown occurs when it crosses below the lower DSL.
  • Pip Filtering: This feature acts as a noise floor. If the market movement is smaller than the specified pip threshold, the VQI line remains flat. This is particularly useful for avoiding "choppy" price action in low-liquidity environments.
  • Signals: The script provides on-chart "L" (Long) and "S" (Short) shapes when the VQI crosses the DSL levels, indicating potential entry or exit points.

Details

The Volatility Quality Index (VQI) is calculated using a combination of True Range and Open-High-Low-Close price data to isolate "good" volatility from "bad" volatility. This implementation enhances the standard VQI through several advanced digital filtering techniques:

  • T3 Smoothing: Developed by Tim Tillson, the T3 moving average is used to smooth the source price data. It is a six-pole non-linear filter that offers superior smoothness compared to standard EMAs while maintaining minimal phase lag.
  • Discontinued Signal Lines (DSL): Unlike a standard signal line that continuously tracks the indicator value, a DSL "freezes" its value when the indicator crosses it in the opposite direction. This creates a horizontal level that must be breached to confirm a change in trend, effectively combining the benefits of signal lines and static levels.
  • Pips Filtering: The indicator converts the user-defined pip value into the asset's minimum tick movement. If the change in the VQI value is less than this threshold, the value is inherited from the previous bar, effectively filtering out micro-movements.

Settings

Basic Settings

  • Source Smoothing Period: Adjusts the lookback length for the T3 smoothing applied to the price source.
  • T3 Hot: The volume factor (v) for the T3 calculation, controlling the aggressiveness of the smoothing.
  • T3 Type: Choose between "T3 New" (modern calculation) and "T3 Original".
  • Filter in Pips: The minimum price movement required (in pips) for the VQI to update. Note: For assets like BTC, this value should be significantly higher (e.g., 10,000).

Signal/DSL Settings

  • Signal/DSL Smoothing: Select between EMA or a Fast EMA for the calculation of the DSL levels.
  • DSL Period: The lookback period used to calculate the signal lines.

UI Options

  • Color bars?: Toggles whether the price bars on the chart are colored based on the VQI trend.
  • Show signals?: Toggles the visibility of the Long and Short plotshapes.

FAQ

How do I interpret the gray sections of the VQI line?

Gray sections occur when the indicator value is between the upper and lower Discontinued Signal Lines, suggesting a period of consolidation or an unconfirmed trend change.

Why is the VQI line flat on my chart?

This is likely due to the "Filter in Pips" setting. If the market movement is lower than the threshold you have set, the indicator will not update its value. Decrease this setting for lower volatility assets or increase it for high-value assets like Crypto.
