Blai5 Double Bollinger Bands
Nov 8, 2016

The Blai5 Double Bollinger Bands indicator provides a visual framework for trend speculation by plotting two sets of Bollinger Bands at one and two standard deviations. This tool aims to identify "corridors" of high momentum, allowing traders to distinguish between trending phases and neutral market conditions.
Usage
The indicator is primarily used to identify trend strength and potential entry or exit points based on price location within specific zones:
- Bullish Corridor: When price closes within the upper zone (between 1 and 2 standard deviations), it suggests a strong upward trend. Traders often use this as a signal for speculative buying.
- Bearish Corridor: When price closes within the lower zone (between -1 and -2 standard deviations), it suggests a strong downward trend, often used for speculative selling.
- Neutral Zone: The area between the inner bands (1 and -1 standard deviation) is considered a neutral or "no-trade" zone.
- Exits: A common strategy involves closing a position when a candle closes in the opposite corridor or returns to the neutral zone.
Details
The script calculates a 20-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA) as the median baseline. From this baseline, it derives two sets of bands using standard deviation:
- Inner Bands: Calculated at 1 standard deviation from the EMA.
- Outer Bands: Calculated at 2 standard deviations from the EMA.
The areas between these bands are shaded to create the "corridors." This method is popular in Forex "corridor" speculation techniques but is applicable to any liquid asset class. Like most trend-following systems, the indicator is most effective during trending markets and may produce false signals during sideways or ranging price action.
Settings
- Median Line: The central 20-period EMA used as the basis for the bands.
- Outer Upper/Lower Bands: Plots representing 2 standard deviations from the median.
- Inner Upper/Lower Bands: Plots representing 1 standard deviation from the median.
- Zone Fills: Visual shading between the inner and outer bands to highlight the active corridors.
FAQ
How do I use the corridors for trading?
You can look for price closures within the upper corridor for bullish momentum and the lower corridor for bearish momentum, staying in the trade as long as the price remains within that specific corridor.
What does it mean when the price is in the middle?
When the price is between the two inner bands, the market is considered to be in a neutral or ranging state, where trend-following strategies typically underperform.
