SMA 200 Ribbon MTF - Support and Resistance
Jun 6, 2021

The SMA 200 Ribbon MTF - Support and Resistance indicator provides a multi-timeframe visualization of the 200-period Simple Moving Average to help traders identify major institutional support and resistance zones.
Usage
The indicator displays multiple SMA 200 lines from various timeframes simultaneously on a single chart. This "ribbon" effect allows traders to see how price action interacts with institutional benchmarks across different periodicities.
- Support/Resistance Bounces: When price action approaches the ribbon, the individual SMA lines act as a dynamic zone where price often find support or resistance.
- Trend Confirmation: On higher timeframes, if the ribbon lines are green (price above the averages), it suggests bullish momentum. Conversely, red lines (price below the averages) suggest bearish momentum.
- Expansion & Contraction: A clean crossover and separation of the ribbon lines often signals a strong trend or "pump/dump." Conversely, "tangled" or messy lines indicate price compression and potential consolidation where price struggles to overcome resistance.
- EMA Band: Users can enable an additional EMA band to provide further context on long-term trend direction.
Details
The 200-period Simple Moving Average is widely considered one of the most significant indicators for identifying long-term market trends. By utilizing request.security, this tool aggregates SMA 200 data from up to eight different resolutions (e.g., 1m, 3m, 5m, 15m, 1h). This allows a trader on a lower timeframe chart to stay aware of where higher timeframe resistance or support levels are located without switching tabs.

FAQ
How do I interpret the colors of the ribbon?
Lines typically appear green when the current price is trading above that specific timeframe's SMA, indicating bullishness. They appear red when price is below, indicating bearishness. The main SMA 200 line may change color to signal "pressure" when comparing the SMA to the EMA.
What does it mean when the ribbon lines are tangled?
Tangled lines usually represent a lack of clear trend or significant resistance. Price action often struggles to break through these clusters, and a "cleaning" of the lines (pullback or breakout) is typically required before a new trend establishes.
