MTF MACD
Mar 12, 2018

The MTF MACD indicator provides a streamlined way to visualize Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) data from both the current chart timeframe and a higher timeframe simultaneously. This tool allows traders to identify broader market trends without switching between different chart intervals, facilitating a multi-timeframe approach to momentum analysis.
Usage
The MTF MACD can be used to confirm momentum signals by looking for alignment between the current and higher timeframe MACD. When both sets of MACD lines show bullish characteristics (MACD Line above the Signal Line), it may indicate stronger upward momentum. Conversely, bearish alignment across both timeframes suggests significant downward pressure.
Key usage points include:
- Trend Confirmation: Use the higher timeframe MACD to determine the primary trend and the local MACD for entry timing.
- Divergence Analysis: Identify potential reversals when the local MACD shows divergence that is not yet visible on the higher timeframe.
- Crossovers: Monitor for Signal Line crossovers on both timeframes. The indicator provides visual fills to highlight bullish (green) and bearish (red) states.
Details
The script calculates the standard MACD (12, 26, 9) on the current timeframe and utilizes the request.security function to fetch the same calculations from a relative higher timeframe. The higher timeframe is determined by a "steps" logic, which automatically finds the next logical interval (e.g., moving from 15m to 30m, or 1D to 1W) based on the user's selection. This automated approach ensures that the multi-timeframe analysis remains relevant regardless of the base chart interval.
Settings
- Next time frame steps: Determines how many intervals higher the second MACD should be calculated from. A value of 1 selects the immediate next timeframe (e.g., 60m to 120m), while higher values skip further ahead.
