The SmartVol SuperTrend indicator provides a volume-weighted evolution of the traditional SuperTrend, designed to react more dynamically to market activity by replacing standard volatility calculations with Volume-Weighted Standard Deviation.

Usage

The SmartVol SuperTrend is primarily used to identify market bias and potential trend reversals.

  • Trend Identification: When the indicator line is green and positioned below the price, it signals a bullish trend. Conversely, when the line is purple (or red) and positioned above the price, it signals a bearish trend.
  • Aggressive Breakouts: Because the tool uses volume-weighted dispersion, it expands its bands more aggressively during high-volume breakouts, helping users stay in trades during strong moves.
  • Noise Reduction: During low-volume periods, the indicator dampens its reaction, helping to filter out "quiet" price action that often leads to false signals in standard trend-following tools.

Details

Unlike the standard SuperTrend which relies on Average True Range (ATR), this script utilizes Volume-Weighted Standard Deviation (VWSD). This method measures the dispersion of price around its Volume Weighted Moving Average (VWMA), weighting each price point's contribution by the actual volume of that bar.

The script applies a multi-step process:

  1. Smoothing: A 5-period EMA is applied to the source price to reduce minor noise before the bands are calculated.
  2. Recursive Band Logic: The bands are "locked" in place, where the lower band can only move up and the upper band can only move down until a price close on the opposite side triggers a trend flip.

Settings

  • Source: The price source used for all calculations (default: Close).
  • EMA Length: The lookback period used for the initial price smoothing phase.
  • Volume Weighted Standard Deviation Length: The lookback period used to calculate the volume-weighted volatility.
  • Factor: The multiplier applied to the VWSD to determine the distance of the bands from the price. Increasing this value reduces sensitivity to avoid whipsaws.

FAQ

How do I access SmartVol SuperTrend?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

Does this indicator work well in sideways markets?

Like all trend-following indicators, the SmartVol SuperTrend performs best in trending environments and may produce false signals during periods of tight horizontal consolidation.

Why is volume integration important?

Volume integration allows the volatility bands to anchor themselves to true market participation, ensuring that price movements backed by high activity have a greater impact on the trend calculation than low-activity movements.
