The Double RSI Momentum indicator measures the difference between two Relative Strength Index (RSI) calculations of different lengths to identify momentum shifts and potential price inversions. By oscillating around a zero line and utilizing adjustable threshold bands, it provides a visual representation of overextended momentum conditions.

Usage

The tool is primarily used to identify market extremes where a reversal may be imminent.

  • Zero Line Crossovers: When the momentum line (the difference between the two RSIs) crosses the zero line, it indicates a shift in the relative strength between the short-term and long-term periods.
  • Overbought/Oversold Peaks: The indicator features upper and lower bands. When the momentum line exceeds these bands, the histogram highlights the area, signaling that momentum has reached a peak level. Users should look for the momentum line to begin curving back toward the zero line as a sign of a potential trend exhaustion or inversion.
  • Trend Strength: A momentum line staying consistently above or below zero suggests a sustained trend in that direction.

Details

The indicator calculates two separate RSI values: a standard length (defaulting to 14) and a shorter length (defaulting to 5). The "Momentum" value is derived by subtracting the long-term RSI from the short-term RSI and applying a 3-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) to smooth the result.

Because the short-term RSI reacts faster to price changes than the long-term RSI, the difference between them highlights accelerating or decelerating price action. Values significantly above zero indicate aggressive short-term buying compared to the average, while values significantly below zero indicate aggressive short-term selling.

Settings

  • Length: Sets the period for the longer, baseline RSI calculation (default is 14).
  • Short Length: Sets the period for the faster, more reactive RSI calculation (default is 5).
  • Band Up: Defines the threshold for the upper momentum band. Values exceeding this level are highlighted as potential overbought peaks.
  • Band Down: Defines the threshold for the lower momentum band. Values falling below this level are highlighted as potential oversold peaks.

FAQ

How do I interpret the histogram colors?

The histogram highlights areas where the momentum difference has breached the user-defined upper or lower bands. These peaks suggest that the short-term momentum is significantly overextended relative to the long-term trend.

What does a zero-line cross signify?

A cross above zero means the short-term RSI is now higher than the long-term RSI, suggesting bullish momentum. A cross below zero means the short-term RSI is lower than the long-term RSI, suggesting bearish momentum.
