The Multicolored Bollinger Bands - Market Phases indicator provides a visual breakdown of market cycles by dynamically coloring Bollinger Band zones based on moving average convergences. This tool helps traders identify trend strength, consolidation periods, and potential reversals by mapping price action to specific technical phases.

Usage

The tool is designed to simplify market analysis by categorizing the current environment into distinct color-coded zones. Traders can use these zones to determine whether to enter a new trend, wait out a consolidation, or prepare for a reversal.

The color zones are defined as follows:

  • Red: Bearish trend; price is trading below the 200-period SMA.
  • Orange: Technical rebound occurring while price is still below the 200-period SMA.
  • Yellow: Phase 1, indicating the potential start of a new bearish cycle.
  • Light Green: Phase 2, indicating the potential start of a new bullish cycle.
  • Dark Green: Bullish trend; price is trading above the 200-period SMA.
  • Grey: A calm market phase with low volatility or lack of clear direction.
  • Dark Blue: Consolidation phase occurring within an established bullish or bearish trend.
  • Light Blue: Reversal phase where price is expected to shift toward an opposite trend.

Details

The script functions by combining standard Bollinger Band calculations (basis, upper, and lower bands) with multiple Simple Moving Averages (20, 50, 100, and 200 periods). The logic evaluates the hierarchical relationship between these averages and the current closing price to assign a market phase. For example, the interaction between shorter-term SMAs and the 200-period SMA acts as a filter to distinguish between a simple retracement and a full trend change.

Settings

  • Length: The lookback period for the Bollinger Bands calculation (default is 20).
  • Multiplier: The standard deviation multiplier for the width of the Bollinger Bands.
  • Show SMAs?: A toggle to display the underlying Simple Moving Averages (20, 50, 100, 200) directly on the chart for further context.

FAQ

How do I interpret the colors?

Each color represents a specific market condition based on moving average alignment. For instance, dark green represents a strong bullish trend, while dark blue suggests the trend is taking a break via consolidation.

Can I change the moving average lengths?

The current version uses fixed standard intervals (20, 50, 100, 200) for the phase logic, but you can adjust the primary Bollinger Band length and multiplier in the settings.
