Range Filtered Trend Signals
Feb 14, 2025

The Range Filtered Trend Signals indicator is a comprehensive technical analysis tool designed to identify market trends and consolidation phases by combining Kalman filtering with volatility-based range detection. It aims to provide traders with a smoothed representation of price action, helping to filter out market noise and pinpoint high-probability trend shifts.
Usage
The tool is primarily used to distinguish between trending and ranging market environments. Traders can interpret the visual output as follows:
- Trend Identification: When the price breaks outside the volatility-defined upper or lower boundaries, the indicator signals the start of a new trend.
- Bullish/Bearish States: The indicator uses color-coding (Green for bullish, Red for bearish) to highlight the prevailing market sentiment.
- Range Detection: When the price remains within the boundaries or the integrated Supertrend components indicate a lack of momentum, the indicator suggests a ranging market, often depicted with neutral/gray colors.
- Signal Markers: Circular icons appear on the chart when specific trend crossovers occur, serving as potential entry or exit points.
Details
The script executes a multi-step calculation process to ensure signal reliability:
- Kalman Filtering: The core of the indicator uses a Kalman filter to smooth price fluctuations. Unlike simple moving averages, the Kalman filter dynamically adjusts its responsiveness based on the rate of change and the period defined in the settings.
- Supertrend Integration: A Supertrend calculation is applied directly to the filtered price data. This creates a secondary layer of trend validation, ensuring that signals are not just based on volatility but also on directional momentum.
- Volatility Bands: The script calculates a Weighted Moving Average (WMA) of the price range (High - Low) to determine current volatility. This value is multiplied by a deviation factor to create the upper and lower range boundaries around the filtered price.
Settings
Kalman Filter
- Kalman Alpha: Controls the smoothing factor. Lower values provide more smoothing, while higher values increase responsiveness.
- Kalman Beta: Adjusts the filter's sensitivity to the rate of trend changes.
- Kalman Period: Defines the lookback period for the filter calculation.
- Deviation: Sets the multiplier for the volatility bands, determining the width of the range filter.
Supertrend
- Supertrend Factor: The multiplier applied to the ATR to set the distance of the trend line.
- ATR Period: The number of bars used to calculate the Average True Range for the Supertrend component.
Colors
- Bullish Color: Sets the color for upward trend signals and bar highlights.
- Bearish Color: Sets the color for downward trend signals and bar highlights.
FAQ
How do I interpret the range signals?
When the price is trapped between the upper and lower bands and the indicator turns gray, it indicates a lack of clear trend. Breaks above the upper band or below the lower band suggest the start of a trending move.
Can I use this for scalping?
Yes, by adjusting the Kalman Alpha and Period settings to be more responsive (higher alpha, shorter period), the indicator can be adapted for lower timeframe strategies.
How can I access Range Filtered Trend Signals?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
