BB Vicinity Reversal Signals
May 10, 2025

The BB Vicinity Reversal Signals indicator identifies potential intraday mean-reversion opportunities by detecting price action near the outer edges of Bollinger Bands using a flexible proximity filter.
Usage
The indicator generates buy and sell signals based on price interaction with a user-defined "vicinity" zone around the Bollinger Bands (defaulted to ±2.7 standard deviations).
- Buy Signal: Triggered when a bullish candle with a significant body forms within the vicinity of the lower Bollinger Band.
- Sell Signal: Triggered when a bearish candle with a significant body forms within the vicinity of the upper Bollinger Band.
Traders can use these signals to identify potential turning points during intraday sessions. The tool is particularly effective on the 5m, 15m, and 1h timeframes. Because the signals rely on confirmed candle closes, they do not repaint, making them suitable for real-time execution.
Details
The script operates on the concept that price does not always need to touch or cross a Bollinger Band to signal a reversal. By introducing a "Vicinity %" parameter, the script calculates a zone relative to the total Bollinger Band range (Upper - Lower).
A signal is validated through two primary filters:
- Zone Filter: The price must be within the specified percentage distance from the outer band.
- Candle Strength: The body of the candle must represent a minimum percentage of the total candle range (High - Low), ensuring that signals are only triggered by candles showing strong directional intent rather than indecision.
Settings
- Bollinger Band Length: Determines the lookback period for the basis (SMA) and standard deviation calculations.
- Bollinger Deviation: Sets the number of standard deviations for the outer bands (default is 2.7).
- Vicinity % from Outer Band: Defines the area near the bands where a signal can be triggered. A higher percentage increases signal frequency.
- Min Body/Candle Ratio: A filter to ensure the triggering candle has a strong body relative to its wicks. A value of 0.5 means the body must be at least 50% of the total candle height.
FAQ
How do I use the Vicinity % setting?
The Vicinity % defines how close the price must be to the outer bands. If you find you are missing moves, increase this percentage; if you want more conservative entries, decrease it.
What timeframes are best for this tool?
While it can work on any timeframe, it is optimized for intraday trading on the 5-minute, 15-minute, and 1-hour charts where mean reversion is common.
