Intelligent Support & Resistance Lines (MTF)
Dec 23, 2024

The Intelligent Support & Resistance Lines (MTF) indicator is a multi-timeframe tool designed to automatically identify and update key support and resistance levels confirmed by volume analysis. It provides a dynamic way to visualize significant price pivots and their role reversals, helping traders identify high-probability zones where price action is likely to react.
Usage
The Usage section highlights how the script processes price data to provide actionable levels. This tool can be used to identify key areas for entries, exits, and trend continuation based on the following mechanics:
- Multi-Timeframe Filtering: Users can select a higher timeframe (e.g., 60-minute or 240-minute) to anchor the levels. This ensures that the support and resistance lines represent significant structural points rather than minor intraday fluctuations.
- Role Reversal Identification: The script automatically handles "S/R flips." If the market breaks above a resistance level and subsequently retests it, the tool converts the resistance line into a support line (and vice versa for breakdowns).
- Volume Confirmation: Levels are only plotted when price pivots occur on volume that exceeds a user-defined threshold relative to its Simple Moving Average (SMA). This helps filter out "weak" levels formed on low liquidity.
- Visual Significance: Lines become thicker as they are tested more frequently. Labels such as "R 3" or "S 2" indicate how many times a level has been touched, allowing for a quick assessment of a level's strength.
Details
The script operates by monitoring swing highs and lows on the user-selected higher timeframe. When a pivot is detected, it checks the volume of that specific bar against the volume SMA multiplied by the volumeThreshold. If the condition is met, the level is added to an internal array.
The tool uses time-based coordinates (timestamps) rather than bar indices to ensure that levels remain accurately placed on the chart regardless of how many bars pass. This implementation also allows the script to manage multiple timeframe layers simultaneously, providing a more comprehensive view of market structure.
Settings
Timeframe 1 & 2
- Timeframe 1/2: Sets the higher timeframe for calculating support and resistance levels.
- Swing Length: Determines the number of bars used to identify a pivot high or low.
- Color Resistance/Support: Customizes the visual appearance of the lines and labels for each timeframe.
- Enable Timeframe 2: Toggles the visibility of the second timeframe's data.
Common
- Minimum Touches: The number of times a level must be tested before it is visually emphasized or updated.
- Volume Threshold (Multiplier): The factor by which the pivot volume must exceed the volume SMA to be considered valid.
- Maximum Number of Levels: Limits the number of lines displayed on the chart to maintain clarity.
- Label Size: Adjusts the font size for the "R/S" touch count labels.
Intelligent Alerts
- Alert Options: Enables notifications for approaching a level, breaking through a level, or experiencing a rejection/test at a level.
- Proximity (Ticks): Sets how close price must be to a level (in ticks) to trigger an "Approaching S/R" alert.
FAQ
How do I interpret the line thickness? The thickness of the horizontal lines is dynamic. As a specific price level is tested more frequently by the market, the line width increases (up to a maximum), signaling a more established historical zone.
Can I track two timeframes at once? Yes, the script allows you to enable a second timeframe layer, permitting you to see hourly and daily levels on a single 5-minute or 15-minute chart for better confluence.
How can I access the Intelligent Support & Resistance Lines (MTF)? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
