The Historical Volatility Bands indicator is a volatility-based technical analysis tool that overlays price action with bands derived from the dispersion of returns to identify periods of high and low market risk.

Usage

The Usage section describes how to interpret the volatility bands and the core smoothing mechanics. Users can utilize this tool to determine the intensity of price changes over a specific period.

  • Volatility Interpretation: Unlike directional indicators, these bands measure risk. Wider bands indicate higher historical volatility (increased risk), while contracting bands suggest lower volatility.
  • Trend Identification: The middle line acts as the baseline trend. When both upper and lower bands trend in the same direction, the middle line changes color to reflect the consensus (Green for bullish, Red for bearish).
  • Signals: The script can generate signals when specific volatility conditions are met, which are toggleable via the UI options.
  • Bar Coloring: When enabled, the chart bars will change color to match the prevailing volatility trend, aiding in visual confirmation of market state.

Details

Historical Volatility (HV) is a statistical measure of the dispersion of returns for a security or market index over a given period. It is typically calculated by determining the average deviation from the average price. While standard deviation is common, this tool allows for varied smoothing methods to calculate the bands.

The construction consists of:

  • Baseline: A middle line calculated using a user-selected moving average type.
  • Outer Bands: These are projected from the baseline using the Historical Volatility calculation multiplied by a deviation factor.

Settings

Source Settings

  • Heiken-Ashi Better Smoothing: Selects the smoothing type for HA Better calculations (AMA, T3, or Kaufman).
  • Source: Provides access to expanded source types, including standard price points, Heikin-Ashi variants, and trend-biased options.

Basic Settings

  • Period: The lookback period used for the Historical Volatility and moving average calculations.
  • Deviations: The multiplier applied to the volatility value to determine the width of the bands.

Bands Settings

  • Double Smoothing MA Type: Determines the moving average algorithm used for the middle line and band calculation (e.g., HMA, EMA, SMA, LSMA, etc.).

UI Options

  • Color bars?: Toggles price bar recoloring based on volatility trends.
  • Show signals?: Toggles the display of entry/exit signals on the chart.

Moving Average Inputs

  • Kaufman/AMA Parameters: Specialized inputs to fine-tune the Fast and Slow ends of the Adaptive Moving Average calculations.

FAQ

How do I interpret the middle line color? The middle line turns green when both bands are trending upward and red when both are trending downward. If the bands are moving in opposite directions or lack a clear trend, the line returns to a neutral white/theme color.

Is this a directional indicator? While the bands provide trend context, Historical Volatility itself is non-directional. It measures the intensity of price movement (risk) rather than the guaranteed direction of future price action.
