Parabolic RSI Strategy
May 12, 2025

The Parabolic RSI Strategy tool identifies momentum-based trade opportunities by applying Parabolic SAR logic directly to Relative Strength Index (RSI) values rather than price action. This approach allows traders to capture trend reversals within the oscillator, providing earlier insights into momentum shifts and reducing the lag often associated with price-based indicators.
Usage
The strategy is used to identify early reversal points by tracking when the RSI momentum shifts trend. It overlays a Parabolic SAR on the RSI line, triggering signals when the two intersect.
- Long Signals: Occur when the Parabolic SAR flips below the RSI line, indicating a bullish shift in momentum.
- Short Signals: Occur when the Parabolic SAR flips above the RSI line, indicating a bearish shift in momentum.
- RSI Filter: Users can enable a filter to ensure long trades only execute when RSI is above a specific level (e.g., 50) and short trades only when RSI is below a level, helping to align trades with the broader momentum context.
- Trade Modes: The strategy can be set to Long Only, Short Only, or Both. Users can also toggle whether to reverse positions immediately on an opposite signal or wait for a standard exit.
Details
This strategy is based on an original concept by ChartPrime, licensed under MPL 2.0. By calculating the Parabolic SAR based on RSI data, the system detects trend shifts within the oscillator's range. This method provides a smoother representation of trend compared to price-based SAR, which can be prone to whipsaws during high volatility. The RSI calculation uses a standard lookback period, while the SAR component utilizes Start, Increment, and Maximum acceleration factors to adapt to the speed of RSI movements.
Settings
RSI
- RSI length: The period used to calculate the Relative Strength Index.
- RSI upper threshold: Marks the overbought zone (default: 70).
- RSI lower threshold: Marks the oversold zone (default: 30).
SAR
- Show SAR dots: Toggles the visibility of the SAR indicator on the RSI pane.
- Start: The initial acceleration factor for the Parabolic SAR.
- Increment: The amount the acceleration factor increases each time the Extreme Point is reached.
- Maximum: The cap for the acceleration factor.
- Up/Down colour: Customizes the visual color of the SAR dots based on direction.
Strategy options
- Trade direction: Selects between Long & Short, Long Only, or Short Only modes.
- Reverse on opposite signal: If enabled, the strategy will immediately flip position when a counter-signal is detected.
RSI filter
- Enable RSI filter: Activates the momentum-based entry filter.
- Long only if RSI ≥: The minimum RSI value required to permit a long entry.
- Short only if RSI ≤: The maximum RSI value permitted for a short entry.
FAQ
How do I use the RSI filter?
The RSI filter is designed to ensure you only take trades in the direction of the dominant momentum. By setting the filter to 50, for example, you ensure long entries only occur when the RSI is in a bullish regime.
Can I change the sensitivity of the signals?
Yes, by adjusting the SAR "Start", "Increment", and "Maximum" settings, you can make the strategy more or less responsive to RSI fluctuations. Higher values generally result in more frequent, sensitive signals.
