The RSI BB StdDev Signal indicator is a comprehensive technical analysis tool that integrates the Relative Strength Index with Bollinger Bands and divergence detection to identify high-probability trend reversals and momentum shifts. By applying Bollinger Bands directly to RSI values, the script provides a dynamic framework for assessing volatility-adjusted overbought and oversold conditions.

Usage

The indicator generates signals based on three primary methodologies which can be toggled independently or combined:

  • Bollinger Bands Signals: A buy signal is triggered when the RSI crosses above the lower Bollinger Band, while a sell signal occurs when it crosses below the upper Bollinger Band.
  • Moving Average Signals: Signals occur when the RSI crosses its own internal moving average (SMA, EMA, WMA, etc.).
  • Divergence Signals: The script automatically identifies regular bullish and bearish divergences between price action and the RSI.

Traders can refine these signals using the RSI Filter, which restricts signals to specific user-defined zones (e.g., only buying when RSI is between 20 and 40). The AND Mode setting allows for stricter signal requirements, only plotting entries when multiple conditions align simultaneously.

Details

The script functions by first calculating a standard RSI. It then applies a smoothing mechanism using a selectable Moving Average (including advanced types like KAMA, TEMA, and ZLEMA). Bollinger Bands are calculated based on the standard deviation of the RSI values rather than the price, creating a "volatility envelope" around the oscillator.

Divergence detection logic searches for instances where price makes a lower low while the RSI makes a higher low (Bullish) or price makes a higher high while the RSI makes a lower high (Bearish). The inclusion of a "Reentry pause" ensures that the script does not produce repetitive signals during periods of high volatility or consolidation.

Settings

Signal Settings

  • Moving Average Signal: Toggles signals based on RSI and its Moving Average. Includes type and length selection.
  • Bollinger Bands Signal: Toggles signals based on RSI crossing volatility bands. Includes MA type, length, and Standard Deviation multiplier.
  • Divergence Signal: Enables detection of regular price/RSI divergences.

Filters

  • RSI Filter: Enables zone-based filtering for signals.
  • Source/Length: Defines the input data and lookback period for the RSI calculation.
  • Overbought/Oversold Levels: Sets the specific ranges where sell and buy signals are permitted to trigger.
  • Reentry pause: The minimum number of bars required between consecutive signals.
  • Wait Opposite: If enabled, the indicator will only show a buy signal after a sell signal has occurred, and vice-versa.
  • AND Mode: Requires multiple active signal types to trigger at once for a signal to be plotted.

FAQ

How do I use the divergence feature?

Enable "Divergence Signal" in the settings. The indicator will then plot labels when price and RSI trends deviate, providing early warnings of potential trend exhaustion.

What is the "AND Mode"?

When "AND Mode" is active, a signal will only appear if at least two of your enabled signal methods (MA, BB, or Divergence) trigger on the same bar, reducing false positives.
