The Moving Average 50/200 Golden Cross indicator automates the identification of long-term trend reversals by detecting crossovers between the 50-period and 200-period simple moving averages.

Usage

The Moving Average 50/200 Golden Cross tool is primarily used to identify major shifts in market sentiment and momentum. Traders utilize the interaction between the two moving averages to generate trend signals:

  • Golden Cross: Occurs when the shorter 50-period moving average crosses above the longer 200-period moving average. This is interpreted as a bullish signal, suggesting the start of an upward trend.
  • Death Cross: Occurs when the shorter 50-period moving average crosses below the longer 200-period moving average. This is interpreted as a bearish signal, suggesting the start of a downward trend.

While these signals are popular on daily timeframes for equities, they are frequently applied to 4-hour charts in cryptocurrency markets to capture medium-term cyclical moves.

Details

The script calculates two Simple Moving Averages (SMA) based on user-defined lengths and sources. By default, it follows the industry-standard 50 and 200 periods. The "Golden Cross" and "Death Cross" are lagging indicators, meaning they confirm a trend that has already begun rather than predicting a future one. This characteristic makes them effective for trend-following strategies where the goal is to capture the "meat" of a market move.

The tool includes built-in alert conditions that trigger at the close of the bar when a crossover occurs, ensuring that signals are confirmed by price action before an alert is issued.

Settings

  • Length 1: Sets the period for the shorter, faster moving average (Default is 50).
  • Source 1: Determines the price data used to calculate the first moving average (Default is Close).
  • Length 2: Sets the period for the longer, slower moving average (Default is 200).
  • Source 2: Determines the price data used to calculate the second moving average (Default is Close).
