The Momentum Shift Oscillator (MSO) indicator is a comprehensive momentum tool that blends the Relative Strength Index (RSI), Rate of Change (ROC), and MACD components into a single normalized oscillator to identify shifts in market momentum.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on interpreting the unified momentum signal provided by the MSO. By combining multiple momentum metrics, the tool helps traders identify trend strength, velocity, and potential exhaustion points.

  • Zero Line Crossovers: The zero line acts as a pivot for bullish and bearish momentum. Crossing above zero indicates rising bullish momentum, while crossing below suggests bearish pressure.
  • Overbought and Oversold Zones: Default levels at +60 and -60 identify extreme momentum. Values exceeding these zones can indicate potential exhaustion or an overextended market state.
  • Slope Interpretation: The line is color-coded based on its slope. A green rising line indicates strengthening momentum, while a red falling line indicates fading momentum.
  • Divergences: Traders can look for discrepancies between price action and the MSO. For example, if price makes a higher high but the MSO makes a lower high, it may signal a weakening trend.

Details

The MSO operates by normalizing three distinct momentum oscillators to a shared scale of -100 to +100.

  • RSI Component: Traditionally used for exhaustion, here it is centered and scaled to contribute to the overall trend strength.
  • ROC Component: Captures the velocity of price movement using a Z-score normalization method to ensure it fits the oscillator's scale.
  • MACD Component: Focuses on the relationship between moving averages, providing a trend-following element to the blend.

The script applies a weighted average to these components, allowing users to emphasize specific aspects of momentum. Finally, a smoothing filter (SMA, EMA, or WMA) is applied to reduce noise and provide a cleaner signal.

  • Signal Length: The period for the MACD signal line.
  • MACD Weight: The relative importance of the MACD component in the final blend.

Normalization

  • Z-score Lookback: The lookback period used for the Z-score normalization of ROC and MACD.
  • Z-score Cap (±N): Limits the maximum and minimum normalized values to prevent outliers from distorting the oscillator.
