5-12-EMA Moving Average Ribbon
Dec 20, 2016

The 5-12-EMA Moving Average Ribbon indicator visualizes short-term trend dynamics and momentum shifts by plotting a sequence of moving averages from period 5 to 12. This tool provides traders with a granular view of price action, identifying trend direction, potential pullbacks, and crossover signals through a dynamic color-coded ribbon.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend health and entry/exit points. The primary application of this indicator is to observe the interaction between the fast (5-period) and slow (12-period) boundaries of the ribbon.
- Trend Identification: When the 5-period average is above the 12-period average, the ribbon signifies a bullish trend. Conversely, when the 5-period average is below the 12-period average, the trend is considered bearish.
- Crossover Strategies: Traders often look for the 5-period moving average to cross over or under the 12-period moving average as a signal for trend reversals or momentum shifts.
- Pullback Detection: The ribbon utilizes specific color logic to highlight pullbacks. For example, if the price is in a bullish trend (MA 5 > MA 12) but the individual moving averages begin to slope downward, the color changes to indicate a potential retracement within the larger trend.
- Support and Resistance: The density of the ribbon acts as a dynamic area of support or resistance, where a tightening of the lines suggests consolidation and a fanning out suggests strong momentum.
Details
The script calculates eight distinct moving averages ranging from length 5 to 12. While the default setting uses Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) for increased sensitivity to recent price changes, the indicator allows for a toggle to Simple Moving Averages (SMA).
The visual output is governed by a specific color logic:
- Strong Bullish: Moving average is rising while MA 5 is above MA 12.
- Bullish Pullback: Moving average is falling while MA 5 is above MA 12.
- Strong Bearish: Moving average is falling while MA 5 is below MA 12.
- Bearish Pullback: Moving average is rising while MA 5 is below MA 12.
The 12-period moving average is plotted with a thicker line to serve as the baseline anchor for the ribbon's trend orientation.
Settings
- Exponential MA: Toggles the calculation method between Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) and Simple Moving Averages (SMA). When enabled, the ribbon responds faster to price volatility.
