Double MACD
Mar 11, 2021

The Double MACD indicator plots two independent Moving Average Convergence Divergence oscillators on a single axis to facilitate visual correlation and momentum analysis across different time sensitivities.
Usage
The Double MACD tool is designed to provide a more comprehensive view of market momentum than a standard single MACD. By overlaying a "Long" (slower) configuration with a "Short" (faster) configuration, users can identify when short-term momentum shifts are occurring within the context of a broader trend.
Key usage scenarios include:
- Momentum Correlation: Compare the peaks and troughs of the short-term MACD against the long-term MACD to gauge trend exhaustion or acceleration.
- Trend Confirmation: Use the long-term cloud and histogram to determine the primary trend direction while using the short-term line to find precise entry or exit points.
- Visual Customization: The tool supports multiple visualization styles. For instance, setting the short MACD to a histogram and the long MACD to columns creates a "candle-like" depth to the oscillator.
Details
The indicator calculates two sets of MACD data (Fast EMA, Slow EMA, and Signal EMA). The "Long" set typically uses higher period values (default 21, 55, 9) to capture the macro trend, while the "Short" set uses lower period values (default 5, 13, 6) for micro-fluctuations.
The tool includes optional cloud fills between the MACD and Signal lines. These clouds dynamically change color based on which line is dominant, aiding in trend identification without cluttering the chart with multiple overlapping lines.

FAQ
How do I interpret the two different MACDs?
The slower MACD represents the primary trend direction, while the faster MACD highlights immediate momentum shifts. When both are moving in the same direction, it indicates strong trend conviction.
Can I change the appearance of the lines?
Yes, the style tab allows you to toggle the visibility of the histograms, lines, and clouds, as well as customize the color and transparency to suit your chart theme.
How do I get access to the Double MACD?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
