The Double Bollinger Bands Strategy indicator is a trend-following tool designed to identify strong market momentum and potential breakout opportunities by monitoring price action relative to volatility bands.

Usage

The Double Bollinger Bands Strategy is primarily used to identify and ride strong market trends.

  • Long Trade Setups: A potential long entry is signaled when a candlestick closes above the upper Bollinger Band. In this state, the background or fill area turns green, indicating bullish momentum.
  • Short Trade Setups: A potential short entry is signaled when a candlestick closes below the lower Bollinger Band. In this state, the background or fill area turns red, indicating bearish momentum.

To maximize profit during strong movements, traders often utilize a multi-position approach. For example, taking two positions with the same stop loss. The first position can target a fixed risk-to-reward ratio (e.g., 2:1), while the second position is held to capture the full trend. In a long setup, the second position is typically held as long as the price remains above the middle band or within the upper band zone.

Details

The indicator calculates a standard Bollinger Band set consisting of a Basis (Simple Moving Average) and two outer bands (Upper and Lower) based on a specified standard deviation multiplier.

The strategy logic focuses on "band walking," where price sustained outside the standard deviation range suggests a strong trend rather than an overbought/oversold condition. The visual feedback (color changes) allows traders to quickly distinguish between ranging markets and trending markets. The script also includes built-in alerts for when price crosses the upper or lower boundaries to assist with timely execution.

Settings

  • Length: The lookback period used to calculate the Simple Moving Average (Basis) and the Standard Deviation.
  • Source: The price data point used for calculations (default is Close).
  • Multiplier: The value that determines the distance of the upper and lower bands from the basis based on standard deviation.

FAQ

How do I interpret the color changes?

The green fill indicates that the high has crossed above the upper band, suggesting bullish strength. The red fill indicates the low has crossed below the lower band, suggesting bearish strength.

Can I use this for scalping?

While the strategy is designed to catch trends, it can be applied to lower timeframes for scalping; however, users should adjust the Length and Multiplier settings to account for increased noise.
