The Outside the Bollinger Bands Alerting Indicator tool provides a comprehensive system for identifying potential price reversals by detecting specific breakout and rejection patterns at Bollinger Band extremes.

Usage

This indicator is designed to highlight high-probability reversal points when price action interacts with the outer boundaries of volatility.

  • Breakout Patterns (♻): These signals appear when price pierces a Bollinger Band and subsequently closes back within the bands. A bullish signal (green label below the bar) occurs when price breaks the lower band but reverses upward, often confirmed by an engulfing candle. A bearish signal (red label above the bar) occurs when price breaks the upper band and reverses downward.
  • Tweezer Patterns (❙❙): The tool identifies Tweezer Tops and Bottoms that occur at band extremes. These are characterized by consecutive candles with nearly identical highs or lows. A Tweezer Bottom at the lower band suggests a potential long entry, while a Tweezer Top at the upper band suggests a short entry.
  • Trend Filtering: Users can toggle the 200 EMA or the Ichimoku Cloud to ensure reversal signals are taken in the context of the broader market trend. For example, a Tweezer Bottom might be considered higher probability if it occurs while price is above the 200 EMA.

Details

The indicator utilizes a dual-band Bollinger Band structure, featuring both standard outer bands (default 2.0 SD) and inner bands (default 1.5 SD). The pattern detection logic incorporates ATR (Average True Range) to filter for volatility, ensuring that "pierce-and-reject" formations have sufficient momentum to be considered valid reversals.

The "SMA 3 High" plot is included as a visual aid to help traders identify when the short-term trend of candle highs is significantly deviating from the Bollinger Band's upper boundary, which can often precede a reversal.

  • BB MA Type: Choose between SMA, EMA, SMMA, WMA, or VWMA for the basis line.
  • BB StdDev / Inner StdDev: Adjusts the multiplier for the outer and inner volatility bands.

Exponential Moving Averages

  • Show EMA 200: Toggles the visibility of the 200-period EMA for trend identification.
  • Show SMA 3 High: Toggles a specialized moving average used to visualize breakout intensity.

Ichimoku Cloud

  • Show Ichimoku Cloud: Overlays the Ichimoku system on the chart.
  • Conversion/Base/Lagging Span B Length: Customizes the periods for the various Ichimoku components.

Breakout & Tweezer Detection

  • ATR Length: Sets the period for the volatility filter used in breakout detection.
  • Tweezer Tolerance %: Adjusts how strictly the highs or lows must match to qualify as a Tweezer pattern.

FAQ

How do I use the breakout signals?

Breakout signals (♻) are best used when price exhibits a "fakeout" behavior—briefly exiting the bands before a strong directional move in the opposite direction.

What is the difference between the ♻ and ❙❙ symbols?

The ♻ symbol represents a standard breakout-and-rejection pattern, while the ❙❙ symbol specifically identifies Tweezer patterns where two candles find support or resistance at the same price level near the bands.
