The Crypto Volatility Bitcoin Correlation Strategy indicator is a trend-following system designed to leverage Bitcoin (BTC) market volatility by aligning price trends with specific volatility metrics. It integrates the VIXFix (Synthetic Volatility Index) and the BVOL7D (7-Day Volatility Index) to ensure entries occur during periods of increasing market activity and confirmed upward momentum.

Usage

The strategy is primarily used to identify long entry points when volatility and trend direction converge.

  • Long Entry: A long position is triggered when both the VIXFix and the BVOL7D are rising compared to their previous values, while the price remains above the 50-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA). This configuration suggests that volatility is expanding during an established uptrend.
  • Exit Signal: The strategy closes positions when the price crosses below the 50-period EMA, signaling a potential trend reversal or a significant loss of momentum.

Traders can use this tool to time entries during volatility spikes while avoiding "fakeouts" that occur in sideways or downtrending markets.

Details

This strategy combines two distinct methods of measuring volatility alongside a classic trend filter:

  1. VIXFix: Based on the "synthetic VIX" concept, it calculates the distance between the highest close over a lookback period and the current low. High values indicate "fear" or significant price expansion.
  2. BVOL7D: This utilizes external data (BITMEX:BVOL7D) to track the actual 7-day realized volatility of Bitcoin, providing a secondary confirmation of market movement intensity.
  3. EMA Filter: The 50-period EMA acts as the definitive trend filter. By requiring price to be above this line, the strategy filters out volatility spikes that occur during bearish regimes.

Settings

  • Bitcoin Symbol: The ticker used for price and VIXFix calculations (default: COINBASE:BTCUSD).
  • Bitcoin Volatility Index (7D): The source for the 7-day volatility data (default: BITMEX:BVOL7D).
  • VIX Fix Length: The lookback period used to determine the highest close for the synthetic volatility calculation.
  • EMA Length: The period for the Exponential Moving Average used to define the trend and exit conditions.

FAQ

How do I interpret the VIXFix and BVOL7D rising? When both indicators rise simultaneously, it indicates that volatility is accelerating. In this strategy, this acceleration is used as a momentum trigger for entering a trend.

What timeframe is best for this strategy? While the strategy was designed and tested on the Daily (1D) timeframe for Bitcoin, it can be adjusted for lower timeframes; however, users should account for increased noise in volatility data on smaller intervals.
