The Electrified Momentum Overlay indicator visualizes moving average crossovers and momentum shifts within a single cloud-based overlay to help traders identify trend direction and strength.

Usage

The indicator can be used to identify trend phases and potential exhaustion by observing the color and width of the cloud between the fast and slow averages. A green cloud indicates bullish momentum, while a red cloud indicates bearish momentum. The intensity of the color changes based on the strength of the signal:

  • Strong Bullish (Bright Green): Occurs when the fast average is rising, momentum is positive, and the slow average is also rising.
  • Weak Bullish (Faint Green): Occurs when the fast average and momentum are positive, but the slow average is not yet aligned.
  • Strong Bearish (Bright Red): Occurs when the fast average is falling, momentum is negative, and the slow average is also falling.
  • Weak Bearish (Faint Red): Occurs when the fast average and momentum are negative, but the slow average is not yet aligned.

Users can leverage the built-in alert conditions to find specific market stages, such as "Counter Momentum" (potential exhaustion) or "Early Trend" (potential reversal).

Details

The script calculates momentum by measuring the distance between a "Fast" moving average and a "Slow" moving average (or a derived smoothing of the fast average). Unlike standard MACD indicators that appear in a separate pane, this tool projects these relationships directly onto the price chart. It uses a "Change Confirmation" parameter to ensure that momentum shifts are sustained over a user-defined number of bars before updating the visual output, reducing noise in choppy markets.

Settings

  • Source: The price data point used for calculations (e.g., HLC3, Close).
  • Fast Mode: The type of moving average for the fast lead line (SMA, WMA, or EMA).
  • Fast Length: The period used for the fast moving average.
  • Change Confirmation: The lookback period used to confirm changes in average direction and momentum.
  • Slow Derived Smoothing: The period used to smooth the fast average to create a secondary baseline.
  • Slow Derived Mode: The type of moving average used for the derived smoothing.
  • Render Using Derived: When enabled, the cloud is calculated using the derived smoothing instead of the standard slow moving average.
  • Slow Mode: The type of moving average for the slow baseline (SMA, WMA, or EMA).
  • Slow Length: The period used for the slow moving average.
  • Visual Multiplier: Adjusts the visual width of the cloud to make momentum shifts more or less prominent on the chart.

FAQ

How do I interpret the different cloud colors?

Bright colors indicate confirmed trends where both short-term momentum and the long-term trend are aligned. Faint colors suggest that momentum is shifting but the broader trend has not yet caught up.

What is the "Visual Multiplier" for?

The Visual Multiplier allows you to exaggerate the distance between the two lines in the overlay. This does not change the underlying logic of the alerts but helps in visualizing momentum expansion in high-volatility environments.
