L3 MACD plus Candles
Jan 30, 2022

The L3 MACD plus Candles indicator provides a multi-dimensional perspective on momentum by overlaying synthetic candlesticks derived from EMA differentials directly onto the MACD oscillator pane. This allows traders to observe price-like price action within the context of momentum fluctuations, facilitating faster trend identification and reversal detection.
Usage
The script is designed for traders who want to synchronize candlestick price action with oscillator behavior. It can be used as follows:
- MACD Analysis: Use the standard MACD line, signal line, and histogram to identify momentum shifts and trend strength.
- EMA Candles: Observe the custom candles plotted in the indicator pane. These represent the difference between short-term and long-term EMAs (default 3 and 8), providing a visual representation of "momentum price action."
- Trend Signals: The indicator plots 'B' (Buy) and 'S' (Sell) labels based on crossovers between the EMA candles and the MACD/Signal lines, as well as zero-line breaches.
- Reversal Zones: Look for "Near Top" (fuchsia) and "Near Bottom" (yellow/green) labels. These identify potential exhaustion points where the price and MACD momentum diverge, suggesting a trend reversal may be imminent.
Details
The L3 MACD plus Candles tool constructs its synthetic candlesticks by calculating the difference between a short EMA (3-period) and a long EMA (8-period) for the Open, High, Low, and Close values. This methodology effectively transforms the standard EMA crossover concept into an OHLC format that mirrors the proportions of MACD values. By overlapping these candles with the traditional MACD (12, 26, 9), the tool helps bridge the gap between price structure and momentum theory.
Settings
MACD Settings
- Fast Length: Sets the period for the fast EMA in the MACD calculation (Default: 12).
- Slow Length: Sets the period for the slow EMA in the MACD calculation (Default: 26).
- Signal Length: Sets the smoothing period for the MACD Signal line (Default: 9).
EMA Candle Settings
- Short EMA Length: The period for the short EMA used to construct the synthetic candles (Default: 3).
- Long EMA Length: The period for the long EMA used to construct the synthetic candles (Default: 8).
FAQ
How do I use the "Near Top" and "Near Bottom" signals?
These signals act as early warnings for potential trend exhaustion. They appear when the relationship between price and momentum suggests a divergence, indicating that a reversal may be approaching.
What is the difference between the candles and the histogram?
The histogram shows the raw difference between the MACD and Signal lines, while the candles represent the trend of the EMA spread (3-8), allowing you to see specific "price action" within the momentum oscillator.
