The RSI Trendspotter indicator uses the duration and frequency of overbought and oversold Relative Strength Index (RSI) conditions to provide a visual representation of prevailing market trends.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on interpreting the color-coded zones and RSI levels to identify trend direction and momentum.

  • Trend Identification: When the RSI has not reached overbought levels (70) for an extended period, the indicator highlights a bearish trend. Conversely, if it hasn't reached oversold levels (30) for a significant duration, a bullish trend is signaled.
  • Ranging Markets: In sideways or ranging markets, the indicator will fluctuate frequently between red and green zones, resembling a sine wave.
  • Overbought/Oversold Signals: The indicator provides specific highlights when the RSI crosses the 70 or 30 levels, making it easier to spot potential exhaustion points or trend continuations.

Details

The RSI Trendspotter is built on the standard Relative Strength Index calculation but adds a layer of visual logic to emphasize the "time since last extreme." By tracking how long it has been since the RSI last touched the 70 or 30 thresholds, traders can distinguish between a strong trending move (where the RSI stays away from the opposite extreme) and a mean-reverting environment. The script uses dynamic fills between the RSI line and the key levels to create a clear visual map of the current market regime.

Settings

  • Length: The lookback period used for the RSI calculation. The default is 14.
