MA Ribbon
Jul 27, 2018

The MA Ribbon indicator provides a visual representation of trend momentum and support/resistance levels by plotting a sequence of moving averages on the price chart. It helps traders identify trend direction, strength, and potential trend reversals through the expansion or contraction of multiple price averages.
Usage
The MA Ribbon is primarily used to gauge the strength of a trend. When the shorter-term moving averages (20, 25, 30, etc.) are fanned out and positioned above or below the longer-term averages, it signifies a strong directional move.
- Trend Identification: A bullish trend is typically confirmed when the shorter moving averages are above the longer-term 100 and 200 MAs. Conversely, a bearish trend is confirmed when the shorter averages are below the 100 and 200 MAs.
- Dynamic Support/Resistance: The area created by the ribbon often acts as dynamic support during uptrends and dynamic resistance during downtrends.
- Crossovers: The interaction between the 100 MA and 200 MA is highlighted by a background fill. When the 100 MA crosses above the 200 MA, the fill turns green, suggesting a long-term bullish shift. When it crosses below, the fill turns red, suggesting a long-term bearish shift.
Details
The script calculates a series of moving averages ranging from a period of 20 to 50, with increments of 5. Users can toggle between Simple Moving Averages (SMA) and Exponential Moving Averages (EMA). EMAs are generally more responsive to recent price changes, while SMAs provide a smoother, long-term view.
The tool also includes optional plots for the 100 and 200-period averages. The script is optimized with alert conditions that trigger specifically when the 100-period MA crosses the 200-period MA, providing timely notifications for potential long-term trend changes.
Settings
- Source: Determines the price data used for calculations (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
- Exponential: A toggle to switch between Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) and Simple Moving Averages (SMA).
- MA 100: Enables or disables the visibility of the 100-period moving average.
- MA 200: Enables or disables the visibility of the 200-period moving average.
FAQ
How do I interpret the ribbon's width? A widening ribbon indicates increasing momentum and a strengthening trend, while a narrowing or "pinched" ribbon suggests weakening momentum and a potential consolidation or reversal.
Can I change the moving average type? Yes, the "Exponential" setting allows you to choose between EMA for faster responses to price action or SMA for a more traditional trend-following approach.
