The VWAP Adaptive (RelVol-Adjusted) indicator provides a volume-weighted average price that dynamically adjusts its weighting based on Relative Volume (RelVol) to offer a more stable and context-aware reference point during volatile market events.

Usage

The Usage section highlights how this tool improves upon traditional volume weighting to assist intraday traders.

  • Handling Volatility Spikes: Unlike a standard VWAP that can be permanently skewed by a single massive volume candle (e.g., during CPI or NFP releases), the Adaptive VWAP uses RelVol to normalize these anomalies. It reduces the influence of statistically abnormal spikes, maintaining a more realistic "fair value" path.
  • Support & Resistance: Traders can use the adaptive line and its associated deviation bands as dynamic support or resistance levels that are less prone to the "anchoring bias" seen in traditional VWAP during news events.
  • Comparison: By enabling the "Show VWAP Classic" option, users can visually compare the adaptive trajectory against the standard calculation to identify where irregular volume is pulling the market away from normalized averages.
  • Anchoring: The indicator can be anchored to various periods including Session, Week, Month, or even corporate actions like Earnings and Dividends.

Details

The script functions by comparing current volume to the average volume observed at the same time of day over a user-defined lookback period (RelVol Days).

  1. RelVol Calculation: It determines if the current volume is typical for the specific time of the session.
  2. Adjusted Weighting: Instead of using raw volume for the cumulative calculation, it uses a weighted volume factor derived from the RelVol.
  3. Smoothing Effect: This normalization process ensures that price action occurring during "normal" volume periods retains significant influence, while "abnormal" spikes have their impact softened.

Settings

VWAP Settings

  • Hide VWAP on 1D or Above: When enabled, the indicator will not display on daily timeframes or higher to maintain chart clarity.
  • Anchor Period: Defines the reset point for the VWAP calculation (e.g., Session, Week, Earnings).
  • Source: The price input used for the calculation (default is hlc3).
  • Offset: Shifts the indicator plot forward or backward in time.
  • RelVol Days: The number of previous days used to calculate the average volume for the time-of-day normalization.

VWAP Display

  • Show VWAP Classic (instead of Adaptive): Toggles between the RelVol-adjusted version and the standard VWAP calculation.

Bands Settings

  • Bands Calculation Mode: Choose between "Standard Deviation" or "Percentage" to determine the distance of the bands.
  • Show Band 1/2/3: Toggles the visibility of up to three customizable deviation bands.
  • Bands Multiplier: Sets the width of the respective bands based on the selected calculation mode.

FAQ

How do I access VWAP Adaptive (RelVol-Adjusted)?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

Why does the Adaptive VWAP look different from the Standard VWAP?

The Adaptive version uses Relative Volume to normalize the impact of price action. If a large price move occurs on a massive, atypical volume spike, the Adaptive VWAP will not "jump" as aggressively as the standard version, staying truer to the broader session trend.

Can I use this for long-term investing?

While it supports anchors like "Year" or "Decade," it is primarily designed for intraday traders who need to navigate high-volatility events where volume distribution is highly irregular.
