Parabolic SAR Alerts (on close)
Mar 20, 2020

The Parabolic SAR Alerts (on close) indicator provides a specialized implementation of the classic Parabolic Stop and Reverse (SAR) technical study, specifically optimized for signal execution upon bar closure. This tool aims to help traders identify potential trend reversals and trailing stop levels with reduced noise by triggering alerts only after a candle has completed.
Usage
The tool can be used to identify trend changes based on the relationship between the price and the Parabolic SAR dots. When the price closes above the current SAR level, a "PSAR Long" signal is generated, and the indicator shifts to plotting dots below the price. Conversely, when the price closes below the SAR level, a "PSAR Short" signal is triggered, and dots move above the price.
Traders typically use these signals for:
- Trend Identification: Green crosses below price indicate a bullish trend, while red crosses above price indicate a bearish trend.
- Trailing Stops: The SAR dots serve as dynamic exit levels that move closer to the price as a trend matures.
- Entry Signals: Bullish or bearish arrows highlight the exact bar where a trend reversal is confirmed on the close.
Details
Unlike standard Parabolic SAR implementations that may flip intraday, this version is specifically designed to calculate trend changes based on the close price relative to the SAR value. This provides a more stable signaling mechanism for traders who prefer confirmation before acting.
The indicator calculates the acceleration factor (AF) and extreme point (EP) following the classic J. Welles Wilder Jr. formula. The AF starts at a specific value and increases by an increment each time the price reaches a new high (in an uptrend) or low (in a downtrend), up to a defined maximum. This causes the SAR to "accelerate" toward the price as the trend progresses.
Settings
- Start: The initial value for the Acceleration Factor. This determines how close the SAR starts to the price at the beginning of a trend.
- Increment: The step value added to the Acceleration Factor each time a new extreme point is reached.
- Maximum: The upper limit for the Acceleration Factor, preventing the SAR from moving too quickly and causing premature exits.
FAQ
How do I use alerts with this indicator?
For optimal results, it is recommended to use the "Once Per Bar Close" alert frequency to ensure the signal is confirmed by the final closing price.
What do the different colors represent?
Green crosses and upward arrows represent a bullish trend environment, while red crosses and downward arrows indicate a bearish trend environment.
