Simple Moving Average Slope
Apr 28, 2023

The Simple Moving Average Slope indicator provides a normalized measurement of trend velocity to help traders identify the direction and strength of market movements while filtering out sideways price action.
Usage
The Simple Moving Average Slope (SMAS) acts as an oscillator that fluctuates around a zero line. Its primary function is to categorize market regimes into three distinct states:
- Bullish Trend: When the normalized slope rises above the positive threshold, the indicator turns green. This suggests strong upward momentum and a confirmed uptrend.
- Bearish Trend: When the normalized slope falls below the negative threshold, the indicator turns red. This suggests strong downward momentum and a confirmed downtrend.
- Sideways/Neutral Market: When the slope remains between the positive and negative threshold values, the indicator turns blue (neutral). This state helps traders avoid entering trades in low-volatility or choppy environments where trend-following strategies often fail.
Traders can use these signals to confirm entries from other technical tools or to filter out false breakouts during consolidation phases.
Details
The indicator calculates the slope by taking the difference between the current Simple Moving Average (SMA) and the SMA of the previous bar. To ensure the indicator remains applicable across different assets and timeframes, the raw slope is normalized by dividing it by its standard deviation over a longer lookback period (typically 10 times the window length).
This normalization process converts the raw price change into a standardized score, allowing the threshold levels to remain consistent regardless of the asset's price or volatility. The script also includes a fallback mechanism for new assets with limited historical data, adjusting the standard deviation length automatically to ensure the indicator remains functional.
Settings
- Window: Specifies the number of bars used to calculate the Simple Moving Average and its subsequent slope. A higher value results in a smoother but more lagging indicator.
- Threshold: Sets the sensitivity for trend detection. Values closer to 0 will result in more trend signals, while higher values require stronger momentum to trigger a bullish or bearish state.
- Skin: Controls the visual style of the indicator, with options for "Flat" or "Neon" fills between the slope line and the thresholds.
FAQ
How do I interpret the neutral signals? Neutral signals occur when the slope is within the defined thresholds, indicating a lack of directional conviction. This is often used to identify sideways markets or periods of consolidation.
Can I use this for intraday trading? Yes, because the slope is normalized by standard deviation, the SMAS adapts to the volatility of different timeframes, making it suitable for both scalping and swing trading.
How can I access the Simple Moving Average Slope? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
