The Elliott Wave Oscillator w/ Signal Line indicator provides a modified version of the classic Elliott Wave Oscillator by adding a slow signal line to help traders confirm momentum shifts and trend direction.

Usage

The Elliott Wave Oscillator (EWO) is primarily used to identify momentum and potential Elliott Wave structures. The inclusion of a signal line (calculated as an 89-period SMA of the oscillator) allows for additional confirmation of trend strength.

Traders can utilize the indicator in the following ways:

  • Zero Line Crosses: When the EWO histogram crosses above or below zero, it indicates a shift in the relationship between short-term and long-term price trends.
  • Signal Line Confirmation: A cross of the signal line can be used as a secondary filter. For instance, when the signal line itself crosses the zero mark, it suggests a more significant shift in market sentiment.
  • Histogram Color: The histogram changes color based on whether the EWO is positive or negative, allowing for quick visual trend identification.

Details

The EWO is calculated as the difference between a 5-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) and a 35-period SMA. This indicator offers a "Percent" mode, which normalizes the difference as a percentage of the current price, making the oscillator values comparable across different assets and price levels. The added signal line uses a longer 89-period lookback to smooth out the oscillator's movements and provide a "baseline" for momentum.

Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for the SMA calculations (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
  • SMA 1 Length: The lookback period for the fast SMA (default is 5).
  • SMA 2 Length: The lookback period for the slow SMA (default is 35).
  • Show Dif as percent of current Candle: When enabled, calculates the EWO as a percentage of price rather than a raw point value.

FAQ

How do I use the signal line for confirmation?

The signal line helps filter out noise. A common approach is to wait for both the EWO histogram and the signal line to cross the zero level to confirm a safer entry point or a change in the dominant trend.

What is the difference between raw and percentage mode?

Raw mode shows the point difference between the two SMAs, while percentage mode scales this difference relative to the current price. Percentage mode is useful for comparing momentum across different symbols with varying price scales.
