The Trade Archer - On balance Volume Moving Averages - v1 indicator tracks cumulative volume flow through multiple moving average layers to identify trend strength and institutional volume activity.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to analyze volume trends and momentum. Traders can use this tool to confirm price action by observing the relationship between On-Balance Volume (OBV) and its various moving averages.

  • Trend Confirmation: When OBV is trading above its moving averages and the averages are fanning out in a bullish sequence (Fast > Medium > Slow), it indicates strong buying pressure. Conversely, OBV trading below the averages suggests distribution.
  • Synchronization: For optimal timing, users can align the moving average lengths and types in this script with those used on their price charts. This synchronization helps identify if volume is leading, lagging, or confirming price movements.
  • Range Analysis: The script plots the highest and lowest OBV values over a user-defined period, allowing traders to visualize volume breakouts or breakdowns relative to recent history.
  • Mean Reversion and Clouds: The colored clouds between the moving averages provide a visual representation of the momentum gap. A narrowing cloud often precedes a trend shift, while a wide cloud indicates established momentum.

Details

The script calculates the standard On-Balance Volume (OBV) by adding volume on up-days and subtracting it on down-days. It then applies four distinct moving averages to this cumulative data: Fast, Medfast, Medslow, and Slow.

The inclusion of the "Highest X Bars" and "Lowest X Bars" functions provides a dynamic range for OBV. This allows the user to see if current volume flow is reaching new extremes, which is often a precursor to significant price volatility. By offering multiple MA types (SMA, EMA, WMA, RMA, VWMA), the tool can be tailored to be more reactive or more smoothed depending on the trader's strategy.

Settings

  • OBV Source: Determines the price source used for the OBV calculation (default is Close).
  • Fast MA: Sets the period for the fastest moving average (default 9).
  • Medfast MA: Sets the period for the medium-fast moving average (default 19).
  • Medslow MA: Sets the period for the medium-slow moving average (default 50).
  • Slow MA: Sets the period for the slowest moving average (default 200).
  • Lowest Length: Defines the lookback period for calculating the highest and lowest OBV boundaries.
  • MA Type: Allows the user to select the smoothing method (SMA, EMA, WMA, RMA, or VWMA) for all four averages.

FAQ

How can I identify a volume breakout using this tool?
A volume breakout is typically identified when the OBV line crosses above the "Highest X Bars" plot or when the Fast MA crosses above the Medfast or Medslow MAs with significant slope.

Why should I use the same MA settings for both price and OBV?
Using identical settings for both price-based MAs and OBV-based MAs helps keep your technical timing in sync, making it easier to spot correlations or divergences between price action and volume flow.
