ZenBot Signals - Trend Strength
Dec 6, 2022

The ZenBot Signals - Trend Strength indicator identifies market regimes by combining directional movement index (DMI) analysis with VWAP standard deviation breaks to highlight strong trending environments.
Usage
The indicator is primarily used for regime detection to determine if the market is in a suitable state for trend-following strategies. It produces a colored line of circles below the price action:
- Green Circles: Indicate a strong bullish trend where the DI+ is dominant and price action is supported by upward VWAP slope.
- Red Circles: Indicate a strong bearish trend where the DI- is dominant and price action is pressured by downward VWAP slope.
- Faded/Neutral: Indicates a lack of a clear trend or a "timeout" period following a volatile break through VWAP bands.
Traders can use this as a filter for their primary trading systems, ensuring they only take long positions during green regimes and short positions during red regimes.
Details
The script utilizes a multi-layered approach to trend verification:
- Directional Movement (ADX/DMI): It calculates smoothed true range and directional movement to determine the strength of the buyers (DI+) versus sellers (DI-). A trend is confirmed when the difference between these two reaches a specific threshold.
- VWAP Dynamics: The indicator tracks price interaction with three different standard deviation levels of the VWAP (1.0, 1.5, and 2.0). If price "falls through" or "rises through" these bands aggressively, a temporary timeout is triggered to prevent entering during exhaustive moves.
- Momentum Filtering: It incorporates the slope of the VWAP and EMA relationships (3, 8, and 20 periods) from the 5-minute timeframe to ensure the intraday momentum aligns with the detected regime.
Settings
Main Settings
- Show VWAP bands: Toggles the visibility of the primary VWAP line on the chart.
- ADX Length: Sets the lookback period for the Average Directional Index and DMI calculations (default is 14).
FAQ
How do I use the ZenBot Signals - Trend Strength?
The indicator is best used as a trend filter. When the circles at the bottom of the chart are bright green, focus on bullish setups. When they are bright red, focus on bearish setups.
What causes the signals to disappear?
The signals incorporate a "timeout" mechanism. If price breaks through specific VWAP standard deviation bands too quickly, the script assumes the move might be overextended and will wait for price action to stabilize before resuming the trend signal.
