OBV-MACD
Mar 31, 2023

The OBV-MACD indicator is a momentum-based technical analysis tool that combines On-Balance Volume (OBV) with the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) framework to identify trend reversals and trend strength based on volume flow.
Usage
The OBV-MACD can be used to gauge the momentum of volume behind price movements. A bullish signal is typically generated when the OBV-MACD line crosses above the signal line, suggesting increasing positive volume momentum. Conversely, a bearish signal occurs when the OBV-MACD line crosses below the signal line.
The indicator also features a Donchian channel component applied to the momentum data. When the OBV-MACD line breaks above the high or below the low of the Donchian channel (breakout length), it signifies that volume momentum is reaching new extremes for the specified period, which can be used to confirm strong trend continuations or potential exhaustion points.
Details
The script calculates OBV by accumulating volume based on price direction. This cumulative volume is then processed through a MACD calculation: the difference between a "Fast" and "Slow" moving average of the OBV. This result is smoothed again by a "Signal" moving average to create the signal line and histogram. By applying MACD logic to volume rather than price, traders can see leading indications of trend shifts that price-only indicators might miss.
Settings
OBV-MACD
- Timeframe: Sets the timeframe for the Donchian channel calculations.
- OBV Mode: Choose between "Default" (standard OBV calculation) or "Price Chg." (multiplies volume by the magnitude of price change).
- Method: The type of Moving Average used for the MACD calculations (SMA, EMA, SMMA, WMA, VWMA).
- Fast Length: The period for the fast moving average of OBV.
- Slow Length: The period for the slow moving average of OBV.
- Signal Length: The period for the signal line moving average.
OBV-MACD Donchian
- MACD High Breakout Length: The lookback period used to determine the highest OBV-MACD value for bullish breakouts.
- MACD Low Breakout Length: The lookback period used to determine the lowest OBV-MACD value for bearish breakouts.
FAQ
How do I interpret the OBV-MACD histogram?
The histogram represents the distance between the OBV-MACD line and its signal line. Growing bars above zero indicate strengthening bullish volume momentum, while falling bars below zero indicate strengthening bearish volume momentum.
What do the crosses at the bottom of the pane represent?
The crosses indicate Donchian channel breakouts. A green cross suggests the OBV momentum has made a new high over the specified breakout length, while a red cross suggests a new low.
