The Moving Average Range Channels indicator provides a comprehensive volatility and trend analysis framework by wrapping a user-selected moving average within dynamic price channels and extension zones.

Usage

The Moving Average Range Channels can be used to identify trend direction, momentum, and potential exhaustion levels. Users can select from 12 different moving average types to serve as the core calculation engine, allowing the indicator to adapt to different market conditions or asset classes.

Trend Identification

  • Fast/Slow MA Crossover: When the Fast MA crosses above the Slow MA, it indicates a bullish shift. Conversely, a cross below indicates a bearish shift.
  • Channel Midline: The Midline acts as a dynamic pivot; price or Fast MA positioning relative to the Midline suggests the immediate trend bias.

Volatility and Exhaustion

  • Range Channels: The Channel High and Low represent the peak and trough of the Slow MA over a defined lookback period, acting as dynamic support and resistance.
  • Extension Zones: The High and Low Extension lines identify overbought and oversold conditions. When the Fast MA enters these outer zones, the probability of a mean reversion or trend pause increases.

Bar Coloring The indicator includes a custom bar coloring scheme:

  • Green: Fast MA is above the Channel High and rising (strong bullish momentum).
  • Faded Green: Fast MA is above the Channel High but falling (weakening bullish momentum).
  • Red: Fast MA is below the Channel Low and falling (strong bearish momentum).
  • Faded Red: Fast MA is below the Channel Low but rising (weakening bearish momentum).
  • Blue: Price is within the neutral range.

Details

The script is based on the concept of the Dynamic Range Channel but replaces the McGinley Dynamic with a selectable moving average. The core logic involves calculating a Fast and Slow version of the chosen moving average. The "Range" is determined by finding the highest and lowest values of the Slow MA over the Channel Period.

The extension channels are derived from the range's internal volatility. The Upper Extension is calculated by adding the upper half-range (High - Midline) to the Channel High. The Lower Extension is calculated by subtracting the lower half-range (Midline - Low) from the Channel Low. This creates a balanced outer envelope that scales with the historical movement of the selected moving average.

Settings

  • Source: The price data used for calculations (e.g., Close, HL2).
  • Moving Average Type: Selects the smoothing algorithm (EMA, DEMA, SMA, SMMA, WMA, VWMA, ALMA, HULLMA, LSMA, COVWMA, FRAMA, KAMA).
  • Fast MA Sampling Period: The lookback period for the Fast Moving Average.
  • Slow MA Sampling Period: The lookback period for the Slow Moving Average used to define the channel boundaries.
  • Channel Period: The lookback length used to determine the highest and lowest points of the Slow MA.
  • Volume Type (if VWMA): Choose between Default or Tick volume for VWMA calculations.
  • Offset (if LSMA): Adjusts the linear regression offset for the LSMA.
  • ALMA Settings: Specific controls for the Arnaud Legoux Moving Average, including Offset (distribution) and Sigma (thickness).
  • Coefficient (if FRAMA): Controls the Fractal Adaptive Moving Average sensitivity.
  • KAMA Settings: Fast and Slow smoothing constants for the Kaufman Adaptive Moving Average.

FAQ

How do I interpret the extension zones? The extension zones represent price extremes relative to the recent range. If the Fast MA enters the green High Extension zone, the market is considered extended to the upside. If it enters the red Low Extension zone, it is extended to the downside.

Which moving average is best for this indicator? The choice depends on the asset. "HULLMA" or "ALMA" are often preferred for reducing lag, while "VWMA" or "COVWMA" are useful for incorporating volume-weighted price action into the channel logic.
