EMA + ATR Support and Resistance + Take Profit Signal
Apr 26, 2023

The EMA + ATR Support and Resistance + Take Profit Signal indicator provides a dynamic framework for identifying potential market reversals and exit points by combining Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) with volatility-based Average True Range (ATR) bands.
Usage
The script is primarily used to identify overextended price action that may lead to a reversal or a period of consolidation. By plotting bands based on a multiplier of the ATR away from a central EMA, it creates dynamic support and resistance zones.
- Take Profit Signals: When price action intersects with the upper or lower bands, a cross shape appears above or below the bar. These markers suggest that the price has reached a statistical extreme relative to recent volatility, serving as potential take-profit signals for existing trades.
- Trend Context: The central EMA line (adjustable in width and visibility) helps traders determine the underlying trend direction while the bands provide the boundaries for that trend.
- Trade Management: Traders often use the green support line hits to remind them to cover short positions and the red resistance line hits to take profits on long positions.
Details
The indicator calculates a standard Exponential Moving Average as the baseline. It then calculates the Average True Range (using the RMA method) to measure market volatility. The support and resistance lines are projected from the EMA by multiplying the ATR value by a user-defined "S/R Length" factor.
Unlike static horizontal levels, these levels shift according to price momentum and volatility. During high volatility, the bands expand to account for larger price swings, and during low volatility, they contract, providing a more responsive environment for setting targets than fixed percentage envelopes.
Settings
- Top Line / Bottom Line: Allows the user to toggle whether the upper or lower plots are treated as Support or Resistance.
- EMA Length: Determines the period used for the central Exponential Moving Average calculation.
- ATR Length: Sets the lookback period for the Average True Range calculation.
- S/R Length: The multiplier applied to the ATR value to determine the distance of the bands from the EMA.
- Line Width: Adjusts the visual thickness of the EMA and band plots on the chart.
FAQ
How do I interpret the cross signals?
A red cross above a bar indicates the price has hit the resistance level (upper band), while a green cross below a bar indicates the price has touched the support level (lower band). These are often used as signals to exit or scale out of trades.
Can I change the sensitivity of the bands?
Yes, by adjusting the "S/R Length" (the ATR multiplier), you can make the bands wider (less sensitive) or narrower (more sensitive) to price movements.
