Edge of Momentum
Sep 28, 2018

The Edge of Momentum indicator is a trend-following tool designed to identify and capture high-velocity price movements by combining Relative Strength Index (RSI) thresholds with Exponential Moving Average (EMA) filters.
Usage
The indicator utilizes bar coloring and RSI levels to signal momentum entries and trend exits. It is specifically designed to filter out periods of market consolidation, often referred to as "chop."
- Long Entries: A long signal is generated when the RSI closes above 60. The corresponding bar is colored green. Traders typically look to enter one tick above the high of this bar.
- Short Entries: A short signal occurs when the RSI closes below 40. The corresponding bar is colored red. Traders typically look to enter one tick below the low of this bar.
- Exit Conditions: For long positions, an exit is triggered when a bar closes below the designated EMA (calculated on the low). For short positions, an exit is triggered when a bar closes above the EMA.
- Chop Identification: Bars colored yellow or purple indicate that the RSI is oscillating between 40 and 60. These are considered non-trading zones where momentum is insufficient for a directional bias.
Details
The script focuses on the "rocket portion" of a move, which is defined as the period where RSI breaks out of its neutral range (40-60). By requiring a close above or below these specific thresholds, the indicator aims to ensure the trader is participating in a high-probability momentum expansion. The use of an EMA based on the bar's "low" (for longs) or "high/close" logic provides a dynamic trailing stop that allows the trend to develop while protecting capital during reversals.
Settings
Inputs
- EMA Length: Determines the period used for the exit filter. A shorter length creates a tighter exit, while a longer length allows for more trend volatility.
- RSI Length: Sets the lookback period for the Relative Strength Index calculation (default is 14).
- Source: The price data used to calculate the RSI, typically set to "Close".
FAQ
How do I identify a valid entry?
A valid entry is identified when the RSI moves out of the 40-60 range. Look for green bars for potential long entries and red bars for potential short entries.
What do the yellow and purple bars signify?
These colors represent "chop" or consolidation. Purple indicates price is above the EMA but RSI is not yet in a strong bullish momentum zone, while yellow indicates price is below the EMA but without strong bearish momentum.
